...or perhaps, strictly, some other night-scented flower, but I've heard the name used for jasmine.
Dylan Edwards Dec 14, 2004:
The name may exist in various languages. The Indian word may exist in more than one form, for instance the Hindi word rani became an English word meaning "Hindu queen". Ratrani ("queen of the night") is an Indian name for jasmine.

Rania is indeed an Indian name.

However, it is also the short form of the name Urania (Ourania) in Greek. Urania was the muse of astronomy in Greek mythology(www.eliki.com/portals/fantasy/circle/urania.html).

agree Rania Glyki (X) : my name is Rania too but is a short form of Ourania. But the name Rania as such is Indian, as said above! Think of Rania, the queen of Jordan!

By the way Urania coms from Uran\'os (sky, heaven) so it is the woman that comes from the sky or from the heaven or at least looks like she does.

Heaven, Queen, Contented, Song of the Lord

There are many different sources and meanings to our name. In Hebrew it means "song of the Lord". In Arabic it means "contented". In Hindi, like most know, it means "Queen". and I'm not sure about this one but I think it means "Heaven" in Greek. Someone once told me it meant "To yearn for" in Egyptian -- haven't found any evidence of this though.
