Indonesian term

kritis

Indonesian to English Other Advertising / Public Relations advertising slogan for a brand of cigarettes
This word appears as the slogan for a brand of cigarettes. I am interested to know not just the literal meaning (which is clear enough) but its connotations or any popular extensions of meaning -- what does it communicate in such a context.

Discussion

Hipyan Nopri Feb 15, 2009:
Really helpful clarification. Thanks.
Archipelago (X) (asker) Feb 15, 2009:
further information about context I am sorry, I did not give the correct context for this term. It does occur in a context of a discussion of cigarette brand slogans, but actually refers to the self-image promoted (or experienced) by young people smoking particular brands. What I don't understand is how "kritis" (as in "critical thinking" or "a critical situation" or "critically" ill etc.) can be construed as describing a positive self image. Here is the full context:-

“Persepsi terhadap perilaku merokok sesuai dengan pencitraan iklan rokok, karena slogan-slogan iklan rokok memperlihatkan citra yang dibangun untuk menarik perhatian dan untuk menumbuhkan gaya hidup. Citra-citra tersebut meliputi Percaya Diri, Keren, Setia Kawan, Kreatif, Pemberani, Suka Menolong, Gaul, Berjiwa Petualang, Pria Sejati, Kritis, dan Gagah.
Hipyan Nopri Feb 15, 2009:
I suppose the word is used in an advertisement. Thus, there should be some words preceding and/or following it.
Archipelago (X) (asker) Feb 15, 2009:
It is a one-word slogan It is a one-word slogan -- and so it does not occur in sentences.
Hipyan Nopri Feb 15, 2009:
You had better provide us with the sample sentences.

analytical

My understanding of the term in this context,
kritis = analytical

Oxford,
analytical = using a logical method of thinking about something in order to understand it, especially by looking at all the parts separately.

Thus, it denotes a smoker that is smart and does not just take everything for granted.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "As a word to describe the self-image promoted by a cigarette brand (and adopted by a young smoker) "smart" sounds better than analytical. Many thanks for your kind help."

all-important

Because it is an ad promoting a cigarette brand, "kritis" would probably mean "critical" in a positive sense, such as "all-important" or its synonyms "high priority, pressing, significant, strategic, urgent, vital, weighty."
Note from asker:
Thank you for your very helpful answer. I have posted a comment (above) giving more context. What I need is a positive expression and all I can think of is "discriminating".
Peer comment(s):

agree John Gare (X) : but the asker's term 'discriminating' is the one I had in mind.
