Italian term

La localizzazione e le vicende delle tribù nomadi

Italian to English Social Sciences Anthropology
Hi everyone!
I need to translate this sentence. It's the title of a paragraph of a text (in the content).

My attempt is: the localization and the events of the nomadic tribes.

Do you think it works?
Thank you!

Discussion

NPutt Dec 5, 2020:
"History" seems confirmed. I would prefer "localisation" to "goegraphy", for the other concept. They are quite different things, in both source and target language. "Geography" is a vast concept, within which there could be "localisation", which, if used "correctly" means, in both languages, in this context "where and how these people came to be where they are". The geographic/cultural concept is similar to that of "localisation" in translation: adjusting the language (the population) to a place, finding the fit, making it work.

Can you ask for more context? In my opinion, the biggest problem we have in coming up with something acceptable is that we have no idea if the text below talks about the past, the present, or both. (The only example you give is the Sámi. I have a friend who is married to a Sami in Norway and they are very much alive and kicking, and are proud defenders of their cultural heritage and language. There is a Sámi Parliament etc.) Without some context it is impossible to know if we talking about "history" or "customs" or a little of each.

Nomadic tribes - Geography and history. Ce titre me semble approprié.

NPutt Hi!

Yes, that's precisely the meaning! I am also considering "geograpical distribution" instrad of localisation...

"Geographical distribution and history of the nomadic tribes"

How does it sound?
NPutt Dec 5, 2020:
The meaning of "vicende" is usually "events in the history", which in translation is often shortened to "the history of". "Localizzazione" is a bit strange to see in an anthropological text. "Localizzazione geografica" is pretty common. Possibly "the placement", "the localisation", "the location". I would go with "localisation", which definition fits. See "Onelook" https://www.onelook.com/?w=localisation &ls=a

Table of contents Hi Lisa,

Unfortunately I only have the table of contents...

The next paragraph is titled: the Sami tribes, so it doesn't really help I believe
Lisa Jane Dec 4, 2020:
more context Elena you should provide more context, the following paragraph at least.

The lands and history of nomadic tribes

"Vicende" literally means "events". In this context I believe it means "historical events" pertaining to nomadic tribes.
"Localizzazione" means the geographical locations/places/sites/lands/territories of said nomadic tribes habitually frequented.

Territories and customs of nomadic tribes

Impossible to do any better without more context, sorry. But this attempt is pretty unspecific!

neutral Rosanna Palermo : customs is not a synonym of "vicende" https://dictionary.cambridge.org/it/dizionario/italiano-ingl...

Where are and how nomadic tribes lived

traditions, customs, and where they lived. Better to use plain language in this context from my experience. If clear from the context, you can also leave out Nomadic tribes and just have Where and how they lived or Where they lived and what they did.

I mean Where and how nomadic tribes lived, please disregard the "are" :-)

neutral Rosanna Palermo : vicende is events, history, not customs (which would be abitudini, tradizioni)
