Italian term or phrase: mater materia
"Il successo transeuropeo [...] in cui pittura e materia comunicano, interagiscono [...] generando misterici organismi di non facile lettura. Ogni tentativo di ricondurli a un contesto concettuale lucido e razionale fallisce, perché innanzi alle loro opere non è la mente ad attivarsi, ma il cuore, sollecitato da quello spirito boccioniano di mater materia che favorisce processi di riconoscimento critico."

"spirito boccioniano di mater materia",

Is it better to leave the Latin/Italian "mater materia" in inverted commas, or translate it?
All suggestions welcome.

English translation:mater materia / source of Matter
Explanation:
'Boccioni became the leading theorist of futurist art, both in painting and sculpture. He was the most intellectually active and artistically creative of all the futurist artists. One of his aims was to vitalize matter (Materia, 1912). Matter had to serve as the expression of emotion and states of mind (States of Mind, 1911). The term linee forze, or lines of force, signifies in Boccioni's work the energies which dominate matter and spirit. '

I think 'origin of matter' could work too.

substance of matter

Explanation:
Two texts appear if you google "substance of matter" and Boccioni. It is clearly not a common formula! When translating just "materia," I use substance or matter depending on the sentence.

here is an example:
"Trained in mathematics like Bergson (a thinker whose work is well known to have influenced the Futurists, especially Boccioni), Ginanni shared the French philosopher's keen interest in the developments of modern physics, and (whether or not she read Bergson's Essais sur les donnees immediates de la conscience or Matiere et memoire) she saw time as a part of the substance of matter itself and of experience."
