As for the answer below: it's noteworthy to mention though, that the Latin expression doesn't have a genitive (mater materiae), but mater is an attribute to the materia; I understand it as Matter being a creative force (or source/origin, as the colleague says) in itself, almost like Michelangelo's block of marble: “In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.” Matter as something dynamic and alive, full of potential to the artist's eye.

no, because the asker's text is about art, whereas master materia is related to videogames such as Final Fantasy.
Maybe, something along the lines of primeval/primordial matter, but I leave it to the English-natives.
