Russian is funny, isn't it? The diminutive suffix makes the words sound nice and cosy. However, here the word means that this is not even a proper house. It is some temporary construction, cabin, sometimes a tent.

: agree with the "cheap" and "slum" part of it. the value of money was a bit different back in the 30s :-) still in the 70s, 300 roubles was my mom's tripled monthly salary and not so little money, but definitely not much when it comes to buying a house,

Разглядываю убранство засыпушки. Стены оклеены обоями. Висят
репродукции из журнала "Огонек". В углу - полка с книгами. Тамара подходит
к окну и стучит по стене кулаком, демонстрируя прочность своего жилища.
Засыпушка заметно сотрясается, но тем не менее стоит.
Девушки рассказывают историю своего жилища. Стояла брезентовая
палатка, и в ней жили четыре экскаваторщика. Потом экскаваторщики
перебрались в общежитие, а палатку занял геолог с женой и двумя детьми.
Геолог обшил брезент досками, засыпал шлаком, покрыл крышу толем. Третий
хозяин засыпушки, водитель самосвала, произвел дальнейшие
усовершенствования: обмазал засыпушку глиной и побелил, а внутри оклеил
газетами.
Можно только удивляться - на брезентовом остове возникло довольно
прочное жилище. Брезент, верно, давным-давно сгнил, а засыпушка стоит себе
на земле, и в ней живут шесть человек.
