ALSO: to visit a maternal uncle with whom the child has SHOWN a particular fondness/affection (I think "stated" or "manifested" is understood!) and may not be absolutely necessary.

I like Taña's use of the word "affection". At the same time, I believe it is essential to retain the reference to the child having declared the existence of that affection. So I would revise my suggestion to:

"to visit a maternal uncle for whom he stated / manifested he has special afffection"
