Spanish term

Perlas de Fantasía

Spanish to English Other Other Jewelry/Beads
This is from a legal document from Spain (Agrupación de Secretarías de Juzgados de Paz con Sede en XXXXXXXX.)
The document is being translated to use in the United States.

"El collar de perlas de fantasía que le habían colocado, había sido soltado."

I did an image search of "perlas de fantasía" and some looked like regular pearls, some were white, others were other colors, and yet other images looked like ordinary colored beads. Other options I considered were "cultured pearls" or "fake pearls". But I don't want to guess. Anyone know this?

Charles Davis Oct 18, 2012:
I agree It seems to be the most usual and neutral term, which is what you probably want in this context.

Good old Wikipedia tells you more than you could ever want to know about the many different kinds of imitation pearls, which is the general term they use:

Christine Walsh Oct 18, 2012:
In view of the context you've posted I'm inclined to think that 'imitation pearls' is the most appropriate term, as this has nothing to do with fashion.
Michelle Wolfson (asker) Oct 18, 2012:
It's a list of items missing from a body that had been transported to Spain from the U.S. for burial. Some items were either missing from the body or coffin or were found disturbed or removed but found loose inside the coffin.
Charles Davis Oct 18, 2012:
Perlas de fantasía They're definitely not cultivated pearls. They're synthetic. You can call them synthetic, imitation, fake, costume: whichever term you prefer. They all mean the same thing: pearls that are not really pearls, either natural or cultivated, but just beads made of some plastic (usually) and covered with a pearly-looking lacquer.
Christine Walsh Oct 18, 2012:
Does this have to do with an attempted robbery or something like that? In other words, is it important that the pearls could have been confused with real ones? In that case, I'd go with 'imitation'
Richard Hill Oct 18, 2012:
Seems a strange phrase for a legal document. Is it said in a derogatory fashion?

Costume Pearls

Means the same as 'imitation' but is slightly less derogatory perhaps.

Costume jewelry (Wikipedia): Costume jewelry (also called trinkets, fashion jewelry, junk jewelry, fake jewelry, or fallalery) is jewelry manufactured as ornamentation to complement a particular fashionable costume or garment.[2] Costume jewelry came into being in the 1930s as a cheap, disposable accessory meant to be worn with a specific outfit. It was intended to be fashionable for a short period of time, outdate itself, and then be repurchased to fit with a new outfit or new fashion style. Its main use is in fashion, as opposed to "real" (fine) jewelry which may be regarded primarily as collectibles, keepsakes, or investments. Costume jewelry is made of less valuable materials including base metals, glass, plastic, and synthetic stones; in place of more valuable materials such as precious metals and gems.
