Spanish term

botiquín popular

Spanish to English Other Other
The context for this one is a survey from Peru. The term appears several times in a list of places where one could seek medical treatment or advice. A few of the other options on the list are clinic, pharmacy, traditional healer, friend or family, etc.

I know botiquín generally means first aid kid or medicine cabinet, but I'm not sure about it in this context. I guess it could be correct but it sounds strange to me to "seek advice or treatment" from a medicine cabinet.

Discussion

Christopher Peterson (asker) Jan 15, 2021:
Now that I'm thinking about this, it's probably just a communal medicine cabinet. The question does say treatment OR advice, so someone could certainly seek treatment from a medicine cabinet.

Note from asker:
Pretty sure that's exactly what this is referring to, the context is almost exactly the same. Thanks! Not sure how I didn't find that second link in my own searches.

home remedies

Although "botiquín" does mean a medicine cabinet, I think it may be used figuratively here to mean something like home/folk remedies.

Folk remedies are herbs, food products, or household items that are recommended by members of the lay community

Note from asker:
Thanks, home remedies actually pop up elsewhere in the translation with a different term but I appreciate the response!
