Spanish term

plazoleta

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Ecuador government loan study

I can't seem to envision what these "plazoletas" are. It seems like they would be strips of grass or cement in between stretches of road. It also appears as "plazoleta turística", which perplexes me:

(landscaped traffic) island

Google Images is helpful here. I used "plazoleta autopista" as the search term to rule out town squares, and got this.

A "plazoleta turistica" seems designed to be looked at, make a statement, and perhaps be walked on, rather than just to beautify the landscape:

But I think "island" would do as a translation for this too.

roundabout/rest area

Roundabout for plazoleta, rest area for plazoleta turística. Not sure though, just an idea.

That being the case, then Bruno's answer would be a better choice. I'm well aware of the meaning of "plazoleta", although not in this specific context.
Note from asker:
In Chile, at least, on some offramps, there will be a space with some grass or cement and the name of the town written with stones. I'm not sure, but this sounds like a plazoleta.

road verges and median strip

Road verge: A road verge is a strip of grass or plants, and sometimes also trees, located between a roadway (carriageway) and a sidewalk (pavement)

Median strip: The median strip or central reservation is the reserved area that separates opposing lanes of traffic on divided roadways, such as divided highways, dual carriageways, freeways, and motorways.

I would translate the "plazoleta turística" as a square.

Although the first **colonial town square was what today is known as Plazoleta Benalcázar**, this has always been considered as tentative as it got up a path suitable for novice Spanish town of Quito. It was only in the 17th century, in the year 1612, when the powers of the city moved to the area around the Plaza Grande, they decided to call this way for being the largest at the time.
