Spanish term

orden (primer, segundo, tercer)

Spanish to English Other Transport / Transportation / Shipping Description of a walk
"A 500 metros del pueblo la carretera de tercer orden se convierte en una de segundo orden. Doblo hacia la derecha y a dos kilómetros del pueblo se desemboca en una carretera de primer orden o general."

It's the description of a walking route and is for UK English, so I'm not sure whether these would equate to A/B/C roads or whether it is a more general categorisation about the state of the road, in which case I'm thinking of opting for class as in "first class", "second class", "third class"...?

What do others think, please?
Many thanks

Yes, some traditions don't change! Yes, according to the link that Matt Robinson helpfully provided, A/B/C roads form part of the Primary Route Network: www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Types_of_road_and_street

A and B roads... Do they still use that terminology in the UK? I 've been living in Spain for so long that it feels like one of these things that will have been superseded by some newfangled nomenclature, as has happened with so many other things.

rate (first, second third)

I am assuming the author is describing how road conditions gradually improve as one comes closer to town, perhaps coming from a rural area. For example, a third rate road can be a dirt or unpaved country road, a second rate road is a paved but poorly maintained, single lane road that generally lacks proper signage, and a first rate road is well paved and maintained, with painted lines for multiple lanes and ample signage.

primary, secondary, tertiary

I believe that because the author is describing roads of Spanish categorisation (https://www.cnae.com/blog/index.php/clasificacion-carreteras... it is a good idea to use the equivalent EU denomination (https://ec.europa.eu/transport/road_safety/specialist/knowle... I would avoid using local terms like A, B, C roads.

First line road (Second line road; Third line road)

Or, "First line highway (Second line highway; Third line highway)".
