Discussion

Ali Bayraktar Aug 30, 2010:
Return simply means arrival of the same airplane back to the place of departure.
It does not need complex organization at the destination place.

But bilateral suggest a complex structure.
Company should have it's offices, it's technical staff, and even different airplanes both in the departure and destination countries.
Yasin Koç Aug 30, 2010:
Hi Michael,

Yes your understanding is accurate.
Michael Mestre (asker) Aug 30, 2010:
You are both right Hi Gannush & Mr Drayton,

I think that you are both right.
I have now understood that this notice was written to make clear that the information concerned flights FROM and TO the listed destinations.

The idea of Bilateral flights (and its other versions "Reciprocal flights" and "Mutual flights") is good but refers to a different concept : when diplomatic relations between countries become good enough (following a period of tense relationships, or due to an increased trade volume), they resume "Bilateral flights", that is flights between the two countries, possibly involving both national airlines.

Is this accurate in your opinion ?
Yasin Koç Aug 30, 2010:
I'm not sure. But I think, it refers to direct flights, i.e. no stopovers while flying to a particular destination.
Tim Drayton Aug 30, 2010:
Puzzling This term seems to be used casually to mean 'return flight', as evidenced by the following taken from page 60 of the quoted bilingual magazine:

http://www.tursab.org.tr/yayin/36/tursab_dergi_mayis_36_5437...

Türk Hava Yolları, 1 Mart 2010 Pazartesi günü 120. yurtdışı uçuş noktası olan Bolonya seferlerini haftada
yedi gün karşılıklı seferlerle başlattı.

Turkish Airlines launched flights to Bologna, its 120th international destination, on 1st March 2010 with
seven daily return flights a week.

On the other hand, all airlines obviously fly their planes to a destination and then fly them back, or else there would be an accumulation of that airline's planes at the distant location. So why would there be a special rule about fares for such flights when they are the general rule?

Tureng gives 'reciprocal flight' for 'karşılıklı uçuş'. There does seem to be a more technical meaning whereby two countries negotiate a reciprocal agreement whereby airlines from each country get to fly an equal number of flights to the other. Even so, all flights between two countries would be governed by such an agreement, so why the special rule about fares?

Very puzzling.

I don't understand what else you want to know. Isn't it clear enough?
Flights are carried out from one port to another, and also at the opposite direction,e.g. from Istanbul to Paris, also from Paris to Istanbul.

mutual or reciprocal flights are the most common in terminology, I don't know any other term and can't propose another answer, sorry, good luck!
Note from asker:
Err.. But what's a mutual flight ??
Same problem with reciprocal flights : in all the references that I can find, "reciprocal" does not refer to the flights but to agreements.. such as "reciprocal flight agreements".
Well, it is indeed clear enough. But I am looking for a translation of the term. Most likely, this term does not exist only in Turkish ; the aviation industry is full of very precise English terminology. It is unlikely that the author of my document made up the term for the occasion. For instance, "tarifeli uçuşlar'' means ''scheduled flights'', etc..
OK, let's say "both ways" then..

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "The first supplied term was not exactly the one I needed, but later and after some discussion you were the first to supply the correct answer which was appropriate for the context ("flights in both directions")."

GUL VISITS RUSSIA'S TATARSTAN AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC

As part of his landmark official visit to Russia, the first-ever by a Turkish president to this country, President Abdullah Gul on Saturday visited the Tatarstan Autonomous Republic, the Russian Federation's largest such republic. This visit was also the first of its kind. After his meeting with his Tartar counterpart Mintimer Shaimiev in the capital Kazan, Gul told a joint press conference that Turkey's good relations with its kin, the Tatar people, help to boost relations with Russia. Stating that Turkey opened its first consulate general in Tatarstan, showing how special Turkish relations were, President Gul pledged to continue to support cooperation between Turkish and Tartar businessmen. "I'm sure with this visit we have turned a new page, and our relations will further improve," Gul said. For his part, Shaimiev said that Turkish companies topped foreign firms investing in Tatarstan, and that last year thousands of Tartar people took their vacations in Turkey. Expressing hope for more bilateral flights between Turkey and Tatarstan, he said that Gul and he agreed to cooperate in the Universiade Winter and Summer Games set to be held in Turkey's eastern province of Erzurum in 2011 and then in Kazan two years later.

Marking the end to a long-standing deadlock on bilateral flights, the landmark aviation pact between Hong Kong and India paved the way for 27 new services on each side, new players and the opening of new routes.
