You are welcome.. Glad that our answers have been helpful to you.
E. Çağrı Yüce (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
Thanks I agreed with you partially, although I found no reference to the term's use in this context, I found no counter evidence as well :) thanks for your comments and answers.
Michael Mestre Jul 30, 2009:
Err that's not what I meant.. Erkan, I agree with you 100%, that's not what I meant..
I wanted to say that the asker needs to see the whole picture, and not only check if that particular adjective has been used before in this context.
Precedents are not required for a translation to be correct, that's what I meant.
Erkan Dogan Jul 30, 2009:
"cardboard like / cardboardish looking sandstone" I partially disagree Michael. Answers are still providing accurate translation for the question, no matter how anyone would interpret it :) If we take one more step, we'll be translating the whole thing otherwise.
Michael Mestre Jul 30, 2009:
Only "kartonsu" was translated I would like to point out that the translation that was requested was "kartonsu", not "kartonsu görünümdeki kumtaşı".
So you need to check if "of cardboard-ish / carboard-like appearance" has been used to describe sandstone.
But the fact that it hasn't been used before does not prove that this is not what the sentence in question means :p

Answers are still on spot! http://www.the-ancients.com/gemigabok/albuera/article_02_02....

I think "meaning for meaning" is the motto here. Please take a look at the article given above. If you intend to use any word indicating anything other than cardboard, I believe it won't fit naturally. Please keep us updated. Thanks.
E. Çağrı Yüce (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
It does not seem to fit in the sentence given, it sounds artificial when put in place. But thanks for the answers, I will cross-reference the answers to see if or not the term 'cardboard-like' has been used in any geological papers or such. There is one semi-relevant source at the moment I found through google.
Michael Mestre Jul 30, 2009:
Specific meaning for Geology ? Yes, some clarifications would be welcome if you think that "kartonsu görünümlü" has a specific meaning in the context of Geology.
Erkan Dogan Jul 30, 2009:
Please clarify I think the answers are pretty relevant, if that's what you mean. Otherwise, can you please clarify further? Thanks.
E. Çağrı Yüce (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
Geology Please mind the subject field given.

cardboard-ish

This term seems to have a rather negative connotation.
I found the following Turkish and English references which both mention unrealistic 3D models. They use "cardboard-ish" in English, and "kartonsu" in Turkish, to describe the same idea :

[In English]

(look at the first post, where it is said about a game that the crowd standing near the tracks looks very ''cardboard-ish'')

[In Turkish]
http://www.ucuyorum.com/showthread.php?t=38035
(look at post #7 by Ekoyanki, who says that he likes the Anadolu Jet 3D model because it is not cardboard-ish :
"Dış görünümünde kartonsu bir yapı olmaması olarak sayılabilir" )
