Amazonları kıskandıracak doğası, daha önce görmediğiniz bin bir tonlu yeşili, sislerin ardında saklı buzul gölleri, misafirperver insanları ve onların sıcaklığını yansıtan ahşap evleri ile Doğu Karadeniz’in saklı cenneti Macahel dört mevsim boyunca ayrı güzellik sergiliyor.
Doğanın eli
Artvin’in Borçka ilçesindeki Macahel, Türkiye ile Gürcistan’ı ayıran sınırın hemen yakınında bulunuyor. Gürcistan’a olan yakınlığı yüzünden birkaç ay öncesine kadar izin alınamadan girilemeyen Macahel’de artık böyle bir ziyaret engeli yok. Türk vatandaşlarının izin almadan girebildikleri köye yabancılar ancak üç ay önceden almaları gereken izinle giriş yapabiliyor.
Barındırdığı bitki örtüsünün çeşitliliği ile Türkiye’nin en zengin doğasına sahip şanslı yerleşimlerden biri olan Macahel’de beş köy bulunuyor. TEMA’nin misafirhanesinin olduğu Camili Köyü bölgenin merkezi. Efeler, Maral, Düzenli ve Uğurlu ise diğer köyler.
Macahel'in kelime anlamını, merak edenler için hemen anlatalım, ama Macahellilerin anlatımına göre. Yöre insanı Macahel’i anlatmaya sol elini açıp sağ işaret parmağını bileğine götürerek başlıyor. ‘Maca’ Gürcüce bilek anlamına geliyor, ‘hel’ ise el demek. Çok eskiden beri diğer köylere merkezlik yapan Camili bilek olarak kabul ediliyor. İsimlerini saydığımız diğer köyler ise tek tek bileğe bağlı parmakları, bütün olarak da eli temsil ediyor.
Zamana ve insana direnen doğa
Macahel’in doğası hakkında kurulacak belki de en etkileyici cümle kesinlikle şu: “Macahel’de doğa insandan değil, insan doğadan kaçıyor” UNESCO’nun “İnsan ve Biyosfer Rezervi Projesi”ne Türkiye’den dahil edilen ilk bölge olması da Macahel’in doğasının zenginliğini ortaya koyuyor. Köylerin yerleştiği vadiyi yüksekliği 3500 metreyi bulan Karçal Dağları çevreliyor. Dağlar, üzerlerinde ev sahipliği yaptığı buzul gölleri ile seyretmeye doyulmayan bir görsel manzara sunuyor. Çevrede kimi zaman şelaleler halinde deyim yerindeyse gümbür gümbür akan deriler kelimelerin duyulmasını neredeyse imkansız hale getirerek kuş sesleri ile birlikte bölgenin akustiğini oluşturuyor. Doğa tutkunlarının ve trekking meraklıları için gizli kalmış cennetlerden biri olan Macahel’de insan nüfusunun fazla olmaması yaban yaşamından hiçbir şey götürmemiş. Bölge sakinleri yaşam alanlarını bozayılar, çakallar, su samurları, yaban domuzları, çengel boynuzlu dağ keçileri ile paylaşıyor.

Pek çok endemik bitki ve hayvan türünün bulunduğu Macahel’in kendine has türlerinden biri de Kafkas arısı. Uzun yıllar süren askeri denetim ve Karçal’ın geçit vermemesi nedeniyle genetik özelliğini koruyan Kafkas arısının yaptığı çok özel balı tatmadan ve sevdiklerinize hediyelik olarak yanınıza almadan bölgeden ayrılmayın.

Macahel
Macahel, hidden paradise of the East Black Sea region, shows different beauties throughout the four seasons with its nature arousing the Amazon’s jealousy, all kinds of tints of green never seen before, glacial lakes hidden in the fog, hospitable people and wooden houses reflecting their pleasant attitudes.
Hand of the nature
Machael is in Borçka district of Artvin, very near to the borderline separating Turkey and Georgia. Nobody could enter Machael without permission before the last few months due to its closeness to Georgia but there is no such obligation any more. Turkish citizens can enter the village without permission but foreigners can visit it only by a permission that they have to obtain three months before.
There are five villages in Machael which is one of Turkey’s the luckiest settlements having a rich nature with its variety of vegetation. Camili Village where a guesthouse of TEMA (Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats) exists is the center of the region. Other villages are Efeler, Maral, Düzenli and Uğurlu.
Let’s tell the meaning of Machael for those who are curious about it, but according to the expression of residents of Machael. A resident starts to tell by opening his left hand and moving forefinger to his wrist. ‘Maca’ means wrist and ‘hel’ means hand in Georgian. Camili as the center of the other villages for a long time is accepted as the wrist. Other villages we mentioned represent the fingers one by one and the hand as a whole.

Karçal Mountains with a height reaching 3500 meters are surrounding the valley where the villages settled. Mountains offer a visual view with glacial lakes they host. Creeks in the vicinity which are flowing sometimes as rumbling waterfalls avoid the words to be heard and form the acoustic of the region along with the sounds of the birds. Machael is one of the hidden paradises for the nature lovers and trekking fans and since the human population is less, wild life hasn’t been spoiled. Residents share their life space with brown bears, jackals, otters, wild boars, hook horned chamois.
Honey of Macahel
Another kind special to Machael sheltering lots of endemic plants and animal species is Kafkas bee. Don’t leave the region without tasting the honey of Kafkas bee which has managed to protect its genetic features due to the military control lasted for years and passages of Karçal that are hard to pass. And also take another jar with yourself as a present for your beloved ones.
