Geheimabsprachen, illegale Militäroperationen, vertuschte Morde: Noch nie hatten demokratische Staaten so viele Geheimnisse wie heute. Das unabhängige Internet hat Regierungen und Geheimdiensten den Kampf angesagt
und damit einen Weltkrieg um die Informationsfreiheit entfacht. Die entscheidenden Fragen lauten:
Wer sagt die Wahrheit, wem können wir noch trauen? Und: Wie frei wird das Internet nach dem Konflikt sein?

Sarah Palin, die als republikanische Kandidatin für das Präsidentenamt gilt, fragte darauf, warum Assange nicht wie ein Al-Qaida-Führer verfolgt würde. Und der ehemalige Gouverneur von Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, fordert gar die Todesstrafe für die Informanten. Die Affäre um WikiLeaks und Julian Assange wurde in Amerika über Nacht zu einer Art Hexenjagd, wie man sie sonst nur aus Ländern wie China, dem Iran oder Nordkorea kennt.
Was versucht Obama zu verheimlichen?
Politiker sprechen gern von der Informationsgesellschaft. Doch in Wahrheit tun sie alles, um den Menschen Informationen vorzuenthalten. 2009 wurden 54,7 Millionen Akten der US-Regierung als geheim eingestuft. Noch 1996 produzierten die USA nur 5,7 Millionen geheime Dokumente. Die Masse des Verschleierten hat sich fast verzehnfacht – ausgerechnet unter Präsident Barack Obama, der doch mehr Transparenz und Demokratie versprochen hatte. Inzwischen wird gerätselt, warum Obamas Regierungsstellen, allen voran das Militär, so viele Geheimakten anlegen lassen. Was soll verschwiegen werden? Tatsache ist: Je mehr Geheimnisse eine Regierung vor ihren Bürgern hat, desto mehr misstrauen ihr die Menschen im Land.

Is it ok to order a murder?
“I think Assange should be assassinated”: This statement was made by Canadian political scientist Tom Flanagan (shown above) on television. Although Flanagan later recanted, it was too late to close the floodgates. Next up was Sarah Palin, now considered a frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Palin wanted to know why Assange was not being hunted down like an Al-Qaeda operative. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee even demanded the death penalty for the Australian document leaker. Indeed, the whole affair in the U.S. surrounding Wikileaks and Julian Assange quickly turned into the kind of witch hunt one usually expects to see in countries like China, Iran, or North Korea.
What is Obama trying to hide?
Politicians like to talk about the information society – but in reality they'll do anything to keep information from the public. The United States had 54.7 million classified documents in 2009. Back in 1996, there were only 5.7 million. So the mass of secrets has multiplied nearly ten-fold – and part of that increase has taken place under the watch of none other than President Barack Obama, who once promised greater transparency and democracy. Many now wonder why agencies in the Obama administration, most notably the military, have amassed so many secret documents. What are they trying to hide? Don’t they know that the more secrets a government keeps from its people, the more the people will distrust the government?

Ich komme aus den USA (New York) und habe 18 Jahre lang (1987-2006) in Deutschland gelebt. Während dieser Zeit war ich viereinhalb Jahre als Übersetzer und Redakteur bei einer Firma in Köln tätig. Ich bin seit 2004 freiberuflich. Zwischen 2006 und 2015 habe ich wieder in New York gelebt. Seit 2015 wohne ich in Berlin.
I am a freelance German-English translator based in Berlin. I first came to Germany in 1987 and stayed for 18 years. Originally an exchange student, I later
worked as an English-language instructor before beginning my
professional career as a translator in 1998. I initially worked at a translation agency in Cologne as a
translator/editor/final proofreader. In 2004, I began working as a
freelance translator. In 2006, I returned to New York, where I am originally from, and stayed there for nine years. In 2015, I moved to Berlin.
