Why you need a native English speaker to translate your Dutch text

You’re looking for a linguist who can translate your Dutch text into idiomatic, localised, native English. Not just a translation – a text that says what the Dutch text said in the way the Dutch text said it. But you don’t want your readers to be able to tell that it was originally written in another language.

For that, you really need a native-English translator.

We all know that the Dutch are amazing when it comes to learning and using other languages. So it's not surprising that, when so few people speak Dutch, most commercial Dutch-to-English translations are done by Dutch speakers who speak near-perfect English. But they aren't native speakers, and it often shows.

That’s a huge shame because if a piece of writing has just a smidge of Dunglish, one incorrectly translated idiom, or a bit of phrasing that’s slightly off, it can impact – even if only subconsciously –how the reader perceives the company or writer behind the text. When there are multiple mistakes, it could affect your reputation and even your bottom line.

Why do you want me to translate your Dutch text into English?

I was born in the UK and have a degree in English and Education from a top UK university. I spent 16 years in the Netherlands, fully immersed in the Dutch language and culture. This means that I’m a native speaker of English who actually understands the Dutch language, culture and people. I know you’ll find this makes my translations stand out from the rest.

What can I do for you?

My particular skill lies in translating creative texts. I can produce an English version of your Dutch source text that is not only accurate and correct but natural-sounding and readable too.

I’ll say what you want to say, the way you want to say it, but tailored to an English-speaking audience. Your audience will enjoy reading it and never suspect it’s a translation. That’s important because, when your content looks professional, so do you!

I have translated six books so far, including all three of Jeroen Windmeijer's bestselling Peter de Haan mysteries. In addition to creative writing skills, these texts demanded extensive and dogged research into religion and history, with hours devoted to finding exactly the right words for arcane artefacts and ideas. I bring this doggedness to all of my work and take time and care to ensure that your text is as good as it can be.

But I don’t just translate books. I understand how to make a text engaging, compelling and persuasive to boost brand engagement and drive conversions. My clients value me for my ability to turn Dutch copy into knockout English copy, whether it's web content, a social media post, a quick B2B email, or an entire product catalogue.

I'm certified for and work with SDL Trados Studio 2021, and I'm SDL-certified in MT post-editing. But I’m happy to adapt to whatever platform you prefer. As an added bonus, I’m also a qualified proofreader your assurance that all the i’s will be dotted and the t’s properly crossed.

Above all, I'm flexible, friendly, and religious about deadlines. If you ask my clients, they’ll tell you that I’m great to work with! Get in touch and find out for yourself!
