Introduction onEmotional Intelligence
What do you know about emotions? How do you manage them? How do you influence others’ emotions?
Perhaps, it is not common in our society to talk about emotions. Yet, it is an important topic. Understanding your emotions can have a positive impact on all aspects of your life. This is because with understanding your emotions, you identify the ways in which your own emotions work; and, therefore, raise your awareness about yourself. This willlead to better control and management of your emotions, which will enhance all aspects of your life.
Thus, learning about emotional intelligence is vital. It helps you know yourself better. It will also allow you to be a better spouse, parent, coworker, manager, and citizen.
Emotional intelligence is a topic that has been expanding and developing throughout the years. There is immense research, studies, books, articles, and other publications on it. In this article, I will focus on the foundation of emotional intelligence. There will be more depth on the topic in following article. However, in this article, I aim to provide you the information to understand the ways in which emotions work and how coaching can provide assistance.
Emotions & Feelings
Emotions and feelings are two words that are mostly used interchangeably. However, there are differences between them. Simply, emotion is in the body whereas feeling is in the mind. Emotions are the physical reactions to situations. It occurs in the amygdala, which is in the subcortical region of the brain . Some call this the “emotional brain,” which is connected to the pre-frontal cortex or the “thinking brain” through nerve cells.
The “emotional brain” was embedded in the human to help them survive. It enables the person to react to the changing environment such as danger. It is also a very powerful part of the brain. In fact, it has more influence on our values, attitudes, and beliefs than the “thinking brain”. This is why changing bad habits is sometimes difficult. Although the “thinking brain” knows right from wrong, if the “emotional brain” is not convinced, the bad behavior will continue. Changing behavior requires the “emotional brain” to be an active participant in the process.
There are six basic emotions that all human share. They are sadness, anger, fear, joy, love, and peace . Each emotion has certain physical expressions.For example, when angry, your cheeks might get hotand your muscle might tighten.The physical state that resulted from the emotion can be measured by, for example, heart rate, blood pressure, and pupil dilation.
Once the emotion is created, feelings are generated. It is originated in the neocortical region of the brain . Feelings occur as a respond to the emotion. They are considered the meaning we put for the emotions we have. There are endless numbers of feelings. Going back to example when feeling angry, you might interpret this emotion with feelings such as jealousy or resentfulness. However, in the core, you are actually feeling angry. Therefore, feelings, as opposed to emotions, cannot be measured.
Understanding the difference between emotions and feelings allows a person to be connected to the inner self. It allows for better control and management of reaction and interactionwith the environment. This means that controlling one’s emotions indicates a control of thoughts, attitudes, habits, and behavior. These are all interrelated factors that once realizedit could have a positive impact. What does this mean?
Emotions, Thoughts, & Behavior
Everything that is inside our body is interrelated. Thus, when speaking about emotions, we need to shed a light on its relationship with our thoughts and behavior. The trio of emotions, thoughts, and behavior is critical to understand especially when aiming to create change in your life. This allows you to decide on which factor to focus on and how.
To clarify further, take a moment to do this short exercise:
Think of a situation that caused you to have negative situation. This could be a situation in which you felt frustrated, irritated, or any other feeling or a combination of feelings.
• Now, relax and take a deep breath
• Ask yourself, “What were your thoughts during the situation?” “What was going on in your mind?” (Remember: feelings are in your mind)
You might notice that the negative emotions were ignited by negative thoughts. You felt frustrated because you feel the other person does not care about you. Or, you felt irritated that your children are not respecting you. As the thoughts expand, the feelings expand. Then, all of the sudden, there is an explosion of thoughts and feelings that might be hard to manage and control.
There is no doubt that such situation will have an impact on your behavior. You might choose to react negatively by screaming or fighting. On the other hand, you might decide to take a deep breath and not react negatively to the situation. In either way, you will have to face your thoughts and manage them. You will have to go deep to your core to understand what had happened in your mind and body in order to transform the negative to positive.
Self-awareness is a lifetime journey. It is a product of a series of discoveries and breakthroughs within yourself. It might take time and effort. Yet, it is perhaps the most satisfying and rewarding gift you give yourself.
Life takes us places. It can distract us. However, you should be your number one priority. Therefore, take the time and effort needed to start the journey of self-awareness. There are several levels and aspects of self-awareness. In here, I am speaking specifically about awareness towards your emotions.
you can start by asking yourself the followingquestions, which are stated in the famous bookEmotional Intelligence Coaching . Be honest with yourself:
• What emotion am I feeling right now?
• Where am I feeling it in my body?
• Why am I feeling it?
• What triggered it?
• What attitudes, beliefs, or values is it connected to?
There are various types of exercises such as the one above created to help a person understands him/herself. These help a person to raise awareness about the inner thoughts and emotions that are formed the current attitudes and behavior. With self-awareness, a person can take control of matters and be able to reach a better life. With self-awareness, a person is not only able to understand him/herself but understand others.
From Self-awareness to Awareness of Others
During the journey of self-discovery and self-awareness, you will understand and realize the foundation of what leads to think, feel and behave a certain way. This awareness is essential in accepting yourself and then being able to manage or change. Awareness allows you to choose and select that way you react to others and to situations. Thus, that is the reason that self-awareness is a critical step in creating any transformation in your life.
From self-awareness, your awareness about the environment increases. You are able to look beyond people’s reactions. You are more accepting and understanding of why people do what they do. This awareness will enhance your management in two levels: self and relationship. As mentioned earlier, self-awareness leads to managing yourself in terms of thoughts, emotions, and behavior. One way to change your behavior is by controlling your emotions or your thoughts. For example, a person feels lonely. This feeling is caused by the emotion of sadness. However, how did this sadness come about? It was created when the person started thinking: “my friends are ignoring me,” “I don’t have anyone to talk to,” “I cannot find someone to share my life with.” The behavior resulted from such emotion and thoughts could be that the person not giving others a chance to spend time with him/her. Or, the person does not approach anyone. The vicious circle of emotions leading to thoughts leading to behavior continues until you decide to stop it.
Once self-awareness is raised, the self-management is increases. The chain of emotions, thoughts, and behavior is reduced and replaced with positive ones. The person realizes that the current situation is not beneficial and will not help achieve the desired life. As a result, the person takes responsibility to break the negative chain and create a positive one instead.
As a result, the person has not only raised his/her awareness, awareness of others is also raised. People will be accepted and not judged. There is a positive speculation of what the other might be feeling or thinking. This gives room for patience and tolerance towards others.
Consequently, there is a better management in relationships with others. The relationship will be based on acceptance, trust, and partnership. It will also influence listening skills and enhance teamwork. This is beneficial in personal and work life. Having a team of employees with high level of relationship management creates a positive environment, which enhances work morale, creativity, and performance.
Now, how is all this related to our topic emotional intelligence? As stated earlier, emotions, thoughts, and behavior are related and influence each other. To understand the reasons of someone’s behavior or even your own behavior, you look deeply into the emotions and thoughts that created it. In other words, managing behavior is based on understanding emotions and having an emotional intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence, or as commonly abbreviated as EI or EQ (emotional quotient), was first introduced by Michael Beldoch in 1964. In 1983, Howard Gardner, an American developmental psychologist, introduced the idea of multiple intelligences. He stated that the IQ test measures only a specific type of intelligence. He believed that different people have different type of intelligences. Some people are linguistic, musical, or spatial. This included
• “Interpersonal intelligence: the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations, and desires of other people
• Intrapersonal intelligence: the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one’s feelings, fears, and motivations”
Although Gardner’s work was recognized, the term emotional intelligence became popular in 1995 when Daniel Goleman wrote a book titledEmotional Intelligence. He wrote that emotional intelligence is essential in any type of success. Goleman stated that based on research studies, “80% of your success is based on your emotional intelligence.”
Emotional Intelligence can be defined as “the ability to identify and manage one’s emotions, as well as the emotions of others.” This definition shows that emotional intelligence includes two main actions: identify &manage. It also has two main subjects (target): your own emotions & the emotions of others. As mentioned in the beginning of this article, self-awareness is the most important step. Thus, to put it in simple terms, emotional intelligence includes:
1. Identifying one’s emotions
2. Managing one’s emotions
3. Identifying other’s emotions
4. Managing other’s emotions
It is important to realize that you start with yourself. Through identifying your own emotions, you will be able to manage them, and, therefore, manage your thoughts and behavior. Gradually or simultaneously, you will be able to identify and manage other’s emotions, which will change their thoughts and behavior.
Why is Emotional Intelligence Important?
Emotional Intelligence is considered a “life skill,” therefore; it can be learned and improved. It is a skill that can enhance a person’s personal and career life. At a personal level, the person with high emotional intelligence is able to manage the relationship with others. He/she will be able to deal with difficult situations or disagreements. This is because he/she is able to shift the personal perspective on the situation and influence others to do the same. Thus, the negative situation is transformed to a beneficial and positive one.
In terms of career, emotional intelligence is becoming a required skill in most international companies and organizations.Some companies have an EQ assessment to determine the accepted candidates for a job. This indicates the importance of emotional intelligences in that it is a major factor in the workplace. In the book Coaching for Performance, the author states that:
“Emotional intelligence is twice as important, 66 percent to 34 percent, as academic or technical knowledge for success at work – for everyone…”
The increase awareness on emotional intelligence in the workplace is based on studies, research, and other publications that highlight the impact on emotional intelligence. The benefits of having an emotional intelligent employee or leader include (but not limited to):
• Enhanced communication skills
• Better team work (respect and acceptance)
• Increase creativity
• Ability to manage conflict and disagreements
• Ability to transform challenges into opportunities
These points mentioned above will create a positive work environment. It will also have a direct impact on performance. High performance is a result of many factors including the points mentioned above. In his famous book Inner Game, Timothy Gallwey introduced the performance equation:
P (Performance) = p (potential) – i (interferences)
In Gallwey’s equation, interferences can reduce the performance. In terms of emotional intelligence, interferences to high performance arenegative emotions that are related to negative thoughts and behavior. For example, an employee is feeling impatient from his manager. In the core, there is an emotion of fear. Fear is poisonous emotion that can eliminate progress and positive change in one’s life. The employee’s fear stopped him/her from sharing the creative idea he/she had to enhance customer service. However, if this employee has high awareness and understand emotions, he/she will face the emotion with ensuring thoughts. This will allow the employee to put the fear aside, and encounter the manager with the creative idea. In this case, the interference is eliminated, and, performance is increased.
Emotional Intelligence & Coaching
In most cases, an employee, such as the one in the above example, will find it difficult to face the fears. A person in the transition of change often needs help. A professional coach is an ideal person to provide the opportunity for positive change. This is because a coach works on raising awareness.
As opposed to other professions, coaching is all about the “person.” In coaching, there is no judgment, advice, counseling or consulting. The coach listens carefully and asks the deep questions that allow the person to discove the answers fromwithin. Through coaching, the person understands and realizes the emotions that triggered the behavior. It, therefore, raise the self-awareness and awareness of others.
With awareness, the coach assists to create creative action plan that best fit the person in order to deal with the emotions. The person sets the actions and not the coach. This will increase the commitment and responsibility to follow through. Consequently, positive change is achieved in different aspects of one’s life.

على الرغم من كون موضوع "العواطف" موضوعا مهما جدا، إلا انه من غير المألوف الحديث عنه في مجتمعاتنا.إن فهمك لمشاعرك قد يكون له اثر جد ايجابي على كامل جوانب حياتك لأنه يمكنك من معرفة طريقة عملها مما سيساعدك على رفع مستوى إدراكك لذاتك ويمكنك من التحكم بعواطفك وتسييرها بطريقة أفضل، وهذا ما سينعكس على جوانب عديدة من حياتك.
إن فهم وتعلم "الذكاء العاطفي" هو أمر مهم جدا لأنه يساعدك على فهم ذاتك بطريقة أفضل ويجعل منك إنسانا أفضل سواء كنت زوجا، والدا، موظفا، مسيرا أو مواطنا.
لقد تم التطرق لموضوع "الذكاء العاطفي" بالتحليل والدراسة منذ عدة أعوام وهذا ما يفسر وجود بحوث، دراسات، كتب ومقالات عديدة تخص هذا المجال. وفي هذا المقال سأركز على "تأسيس وبناء الذكاء العاطفي" وهدفي هو إعطاؤك معلومات تمكنك من فهم طريقة عمل عواطفك وكيف بإمكان الكوتشينج أن مساعدتك.
المشاعر والأحاسيس
المشاعر والأحاسيس كلمتان تستخدمان في اغلب الأحيان للدلالة على شيء واحد .ولكن في الحقيقة هناك اختلاف بينهما.فببساطة العواطف تكمن في الجسد أما الأحاسيس فموطنها العقل.إن العواطف هي الردود والاستجابات الجسدية تجاه المواقف المختلفة وتحدث في اللوزة وهي المنطقة تحت القشرية للدماغ التي يطلق عليها البعض الدماغ العاطفي الذي يتصل بالقشرة الأمامية الجبهية (العقل التحليلي) بواسطة خلايا عصبية.
تم تضمين العقل العاطفي في الإنسان لمساعدته على البقاء.انه يمكن الشخص من القيام بردود الأفعال المناسبة تجاه المواقف المختلفة والتي قد تكون خطيرة أحيانا. وهو كذلك جزء مهم جدا من الدماغ وبإمكانه التأثير في قيمنا، مواقفنا ومعتقداتنا أكثر من العقل المفكر ولهذا يصعب علينا في بعض الأحيان التوقف عن ممارسة بعض العادات السيئة؛ فعلى الرغم من معرفة العقل التحليلي التمييز بين الصواب والخطأ فان الأسلوب السيئ لن يتوقف ما لم يقتنع العقل العاطفي وبالتالي فان تغيير السلوك يتطلب أن يكون هذا الأخير مشاركا فعالا في العملية
يتشارك جميع الناس في ستة عواطف أساسية وهي: الحزن، الغضب، الخوف، الفرح، الحب والسلام، ولكل واحدة منها تعبيرات جسدية خاصة، فعلى سبيل المثال حين تكون غاضبا فانك ستشعر بسخونة خديك كما أن عضلاتك ستكون متشنجة.يمكن قياس الحالة الجسدية الناتجة عن الانفعال بنبض القلب وضغط الدم وكذا بمدى توسع حدقة العين.
عندما تنتج العواطف فان الأحاسيس التي تنشا في القشرة المخية الحديثة تتبعها مباشرة.إن هذه الأخيرة هي استجابة للعواطف وعددها كبير جدا، كما يمكن القول بأنها تعبير عن العواطف التي بداخلنا.فعلى سبيل المثال حينما تشعر بالغضب قد تفسر هذه العاطفة بأحاسيس كالغيرة أو الاستياء ولكن حقيقة الأمر هي انك تشعر بالغضب، وبالتالي فلا يمكن قياس المشاعر أو الأحاسيس لأنها ببساطة تعبيرات أو علامات للعواطف الأصلية التي نحس بها.
إن فهم الاختلاف الموجود بين العواطف والأحاسيس يمكن الإنسان من الاتصال بذاته الباطنية كما انه يمكنه من التحكم بردود أفعاله ويجعله يتعامل مع محيطه بشكل أفضل.إن مقدرة احدنا التحكم في عواطفه تؤدي به إلى التحكم في أفكاره، أفعاله، عاداته وأسلوبه. إن هذه العناصر مترابطة فيما بينها و إذا ما تم إدراكها فانه يمكن أن يكون لها اثر جد ايجابي. ماذا يعني هذا؟
العواطف، الأفكار والسلوكيات
كل ما هو موجود داخل أجسادنا متصل ومترابط مع بعضه البعض، وبالتالي فانه بحديثنا عن العواطف فنحتاج لتسليط الضوء على علاقتها بالأفكار والسلوكيات.إن هذا الثلاثي المتكون من العواطف، الأفكار والسلوكيات لا يمكن فهمه بسهولة وخاصة عندما يريد الواحد منا إجراء تغيير في حياته لأنه سيكون عليه أن يقرر أي عامل من هذه العوامل الثلاثة سوف يركز عليه وكيف سيتم ذلك.
لكي تتضح لديك الفكرة قم بإجراء هذا التمرين البسيط:
• فكر في موقف أدى بك إلى نتيجة سلبية: يمكن أن يكون موقفا شعرت فيه بالغضب أو الإحباط أو أي إحساس سيء أو مجموعة من الأحاسيس السيئة.
• الآن استرح وخذ نفسا عميقا.
• اسأل نفسك الآن ماهي الأفكار التي كانت تدور في ذهنك أثناء هذا الموقف السيئ؟ ما الذي كان يدور في عقلك؟ (تذكر الأحاسيس موجودة في عقلك).
قد تكون قد لاحظت بان عواطف السيئة هي نتاج أفكارك السيئة.قد تكون قد شعرت بالإحباط لأنك أحسست بان الشخص الأخر لا يهتم بك، أو شعرت بالغضب مثلا لان أولادك لم يحترموك، وبالتالي كلما توسعت الأفكار توسعت الأحاسيس معها، إلا أن يحدث انفجار مفاجئ للعواطف والأحاسيس والتي سيكون من الصعب التحكم بها والسيطرة عليها.
لا يوجد أدني شك بان مواقف مماثلة سيكون لها تأثيرات على سلوكك؛ قد تختار أن ترد بطريقة سلبية كالصراخ أو العراك كما يمكنك أن تأخذ نفسا عميقا ولا تقوم بأي ردة فعل، وفي كل الأحوال عليك مواجهة أفكارك وتسييرها.سيكون عليك هنا أن تتعمق في ذاتك لتتمكن من فهم ما الذي حدث في عقلك وقلبك لتتمكن من تحويل الجانب السلبي إلى جانب ايجابي.
من الإدراك الذاتي
إن الإدراك الذاتي هو رحلة تدوم مدى الحياة.انه نتاج سلسلة من الاكتشافات عن نفسك التي قد تستغرق منك جهدا ووقتا كبيرين، ولكنها أثمن هدية يمكن أن تقدمها لنفسك.
إن الحياة تأخذ منا الكثير من الأشياء، كما أنها تلهينا كثيرا، وعلى الرغم من كل ذلك يجب أن تكون نفسك هي أولى أولوياتك، ولهذا فانه عليك أن تكرس كل الوقت والمجهود الكافيين لتبدأ رحلة الإدراك الذاتي.
هناك العديد من المستويات والمظاهر للإدراك الذاتي ولكننا هنا سنتحدث عن الإدراك على مستوى العواطف.
يمكن أن تبدأ بهذه التساؤلات التي ينبغي أن تطرحها على نفسك. إنها مجموعة من الأسئلة تم تأسيسها في الكتاب الشهير" Emotional Intelligence Coaching " "كوتشينج الذكاء العاطفي".كن صادقا مع نفسك عند الإجابة عليها:
1. ما هي العواطف التي أحس بها الآن؟
2. أين أحس بها في جسدي؟
3. لماذا أحس بها؟
4. ما الذي أثار هذه العواطف؟
5. ماهي الأساليب، المعتقدات أو القيم المتصلة بها؟
هناك العديد من التمارين المماثلة والتي من شانها أن تساعد الشخص على فهم ذاته وتمكنه من رفع مستوى إدراكه عن الأفكار والعواطف الداخلية التي أدت به إلى تلك السلوكيات. إن الإدراك الذاتي يمكن الإنسان من التحكم في أفعاله كما يمكنه من العيش بصورة أفضل.انه لا يساعد الشخص على فهم نفسه فحسب بل ويمكنه من فهم الآخرين أيضا
من الإدراك الذاتي إلى إدراك الآخرين
خلال رحلة اكتشاف النفس والإدراك الذاتي ستتمكن من فهم وإدراك الأشياء التي أدت إلى التفكير، الشعور والتصرف بطرائق معينة.هذا الإدراك هو مهم جدا فيما يخص تقبلك لنفسك لتتمكن فيما بعد من الإدارة أو التغيير.إنه يمكنك أيضا من اختيار وتحديد الطريقة التي تتعامل بها مع المواقف والأشخاص، ولهذا السبب يعتبر الإدراك الذاتي مرحلة أساسية لإحداث أي تغيير في حياتك
بواسطة الإدراك الذاتي يرتفع مستوى إدراكك للمحيط الذي تعيش فيه. سوف يكون بإمكانك رؤية ما وراء ردود أفعال الآخرين وسوف تصبح أكثر تقبلا وفهما للأسباب التي تجعل الناس يتصرفون بطريقة معينة. الإدراك الذاتي سيطور كذلك من قدرتك على الإدارة على مستويين: ذاتك وعلاقاتك.فكما تم ذكره سابقا الإدراك الذاتي يؤدي إلى تحكمك بصورة أفضل في عواطفك، أفكارك وتصرفاتك.توجد طريقة واحدة لتغيير تصرفاتك وهي بتغيير أفكارك أو عواطفك، فعلى سبيل المثال الشعور بالوحدة عند أي شخص سببه هو عاطفة الحزن.ولكن من أين جاء هذا الحزن؟انه ناتج عن تفكير الإنسان بان أصدقاءه يتجاهلونه أو لأنه لا يوجد احد ليتحدث إليه، أو لأنه لا يوجد احد ليتشارك حياته معه.إن السلوك الناتج عن أفكار وعواطف مماثلة قد يكون بسبب كون هذا الشخص لم يعط للآخرين فرصة لتمضية الوقت معه أو بسبب كونه شخصا انطوائيا. هذه الحلقة المفرغة من العواطف التي تؤدي إلى أفكار والتي بدورها تؤدي إلى تصرفات معينة لن تتوقف أبدا حتى تقرر ذلك.
عندما يرتفع مستوى الإدراك الذاتي فان إدارة الذات ستتحسن هي الأخرى.إن سلسلة العواطف والأفكار والسلوكيات ستتقلص وتحل محلها واحدة أخرى ايجابية.سيدرك الشخص أن الموقف الحالي غير مفيد وأنه لن يساعد في تحقيق الحياة التي يرغب بها وهذا ما سيدفعه للتحلي بالمسؤولية اللازمة لكسر السلسلة السلبية وإنشاء واحدة أخرى ايجابية بديلة للأولى.
وفي آخر المطاف يجد الإنسان نفسه مدركا أكثر لنفسه وللآخرين وسيتمكن من تقبلهم عوضا عن اتهامهم أو إصدار أحكام عنهم، كما أن تكهناته حول ما قد يفكر به الناس أو يحسونه ستصير ايجابية وهذا ما سيترك مجالا للصبر والتسامح في تعامله مع الغير.
نتيجة لكل ذلك ستتحسن العلاقات بين الأشخاص وسيسهل إدارتها لأنها مبنية على التقبل، الثقة والشراكة.ستتأثر كذلك مهارة السمع وسيتطور العمل الجماعي، وهذا ما سيكون مفيدا جدا على مستوى الحياة الشخصية والاجتماعية على حد سواء .أن تمتلك فريق عمل يتمتع بمستوى علائقي وطيد، وقادر على إدارة تعاملاته سيجعل من محيط العمل مريحا وايجابيا مما سيطور من أخلاقيات العمل، الإبداع والكفاءة.
الآن كيف يكون لكل هذا علاقة بموضوعنا الذكاء العاطفي؟ كما وقد سبق ذكره سابقا إن العواطف، الأفكار والسلوكيات متصلة فيما بينهما وتؤثر على بعضها البعض، وللتمكن من فهم الأسباب التي أدت بشخص ما للتصرف بطريقة معينة أو لفهم تصرفاتك الشخصية ينبغي النظر بعمق إلى العواطف والأفكار المسببة لها.بعبارة أخرى إن التحكم وإدارة التصرفات والسلوكيات يقوم على فهم العواطف وامتلاك ذكاء عاطفي.

تم تقديم الذكاء العاطفي لأول مرة من طرف ميكائيل بيلدوش Michael Beldoch عام 1966، ثم في عام 1983 قام طبيب مطور نفساني أمريكي يدعى "هوارد جاردنير" Howard Gardne " بتقديم فكرة الذكاءات المتعددة، و قد قال بأن اختبار الذكاء الذي كان يستخدم آنذاك لا يقيس سوى نوع محدد من الذكاء، كما انه يعتقد أن الناس قد يمتلكون أنواعا أخرى من الذكاءات؛ فبعض الناس يملكون ذكاء لسانيا وآخرون يمتلكون ذكاء موسيقيا وغيرهم كثير.ويدخل في هذه التصنيفات:
• الذكاء ما بين الأفراد: وهو المقدرة على فهم الدوافع الحوافز ورغبات الأشخاص الآخرين.
• الذكاء الشخصي: القدرة على فهم الذات، أحاسيسها، مخاوفها وحوافزها.
على الرغم من أن عمل "جاردنير" قد تم الاعتراف به آنذاك، إلا أن مصطلح الذكاء العاطفي لم يصبح مشهورا سوى عام 1995عندما كتب "دانييل جولمان" "Daniel Goleman " كتابا عنوانه: الذكاء العاطفي" Emotional Intelligence " وقد كتب بأن الذكاء العاطفي مهم لتحقيق أي نوع من النجاحات، وقد أكد بأنه استنادا للدراسات البحثية فان 80% من نجاحك يعتمد على ذكائك العاطفي.

لماذا يعتبر الذكاء العاطفي مهما؟
يعتبر الذكاء العاطفي مهارة حياة، ولذلك يمكن تعلمها وتطويرها.إنها مهارة يمكنها تعزيز الحياة الشخصية والعملية للفرد، فعلى المستوى الشخصي مثلا يمكن للفرد الذي يتمتع بالذكاء العاطفي من أن يدير علاقته بالآخرين، كما انه سيتمكن من التعامل مع المواقف الصعبة وحتى مع الاختلافات، وهذا لأنه قادر على تغيير وجهة نظره الشخصية- في ذلك الموقف- كما انه قادر على التأثير على الآخرين بأن يفعلوا نفس الشيء،وفي الأخير سيتحول الوضع السلبي إلى وضع ايجابي ومفيد.
إن مهارة الذكاء الاجتماعي صارت ضرورية في أغلبية الشركات والمؤسسات، كما وقد تخضع بعض الشركات المتقدمين للوظائف لاختبار الذكاء العاطفي وتعتبره شرطا ضروريا حتى يتم قبولهم للعمل، وهذا ما يدل على أهمية الذكاء العاطفي فهو عامل أساسي في محيط العمل.

CHAPTER I.
BACTERIA AS PLANTS.
During the last fifteen years the subject of bacteriology [Footnote: The term microbe is simply a word which has been coined to include all of the microscopic plants commonly included under the terms bacteria and yeasts.] has developed with a marvellous rapidity. At the beginning of the ninth decade of the century bacteria were scarcely heard of outside of scientific circles, and very little was known about them even among scientists. Today they are almost household words, and everyone who reads is beginning to recognise that they have important relations to his everyday life. The organisms called bacteria comprise simply a small class of low plants, but this small group has proved to be of such vast importance in its relation to the world in general that its study has little by little crystallized into a science by itself. It is a somewhat anomalous fact that a special branch of science, interesting such a large number of people, should be developed around a small group of low plants. The importance of bacteriology is not due to any importance bacteria have as plants or as members of the vegetable kingdom, but solely to their powers of producing profound changes in Nature. There is no one family of plants that begins to compare with them in importance. It is the object of this work to point out briefly how much both of good and ill we owe to the life and growth of these microscopic organisms. As we have learned more and more of them during the last fifty years, it has become more and more evident that this one little class of microscopic plants fills a place in Nature's processes which in some respects balances that filled by the whole of the green plants. Minute as they are, their importance can hardly be overrated, for upon their activities is founded the continued life of the animal and vegetable kingdom. For good and for ill they are agents of neverceasing and almost unlimited powers.
HISTORICAL.
The study of bacteria practically began with the use of the microscope. It was toward the close of the seventeenth century that the Dutch microscopist, Leeuwenhoek, working with his simple lenses, first saw the organisms which we now know under this name, with sufficient clearness to describe them. Beyond mentioning their existence, however, his observations told little or nothing. Nor can much more be said of the studies which followed during the next one hundred and fifty years. During this long period many a microscope was turned to the observation of these minute organisms, but the majority of observers were contented with simply seeing them, marvelling at their minuteness, and uttering many exclamations of astonishment at the wonders of Nature. A few men of more strictly scientific natures paid some attention to these little organisms. Among them we should perhaps mention Von Gleichen, Muller, Spallanzani, and Needham. Each of these, as well as others, made some contributions to our knowledge of microscopical life, and among other organisms studied those which we now call bacteria. Speculations were even made at these early dates of the possible causal connection of these organisms with diseases, and for a little the medical profession was interested in the suggestion. It was impossible then, however, to obtain any evidence for the truth of this speculation, and it was abandoned as unfounded, and even forgotten completely, until revived again about the middle of the 19th century. During this century of wonder a sufficiency of exactness was, however, introduced into the study of microscopic organisms to call for the use of names, and we find Muller using the names of Monas, Proteus, Vibrio, Bacillus, and Spirillum, names which still continue in use, although commonly with a different significance from that given them by Muller. Muller did indeed make a study sufficient to recognise the several distinct types, and attempted to classsify these bodies. They were not regarded as of much importance, but simply as the most minute organisms known.
Nothing of importance came from this work, however, partly because of the inadequacy of the microscopes of the day, and partly because of a failure to understand the real problems at issue. When we remember the minuteness of the bacteria, the impossibility of studying any one of them for more than a few moments at a time —only so long, in fact, as it can be followed under a microscope; when we remember, too, the imperfection of the compound microscopes which made high powers practical impossibilities; and, above all, when we appreciate the looseness of the ideas which pervaded all scientists as to the necessity of accurate observation in distinction from inference, it is not strange that the last century gave us no knowledge of bacteria beyond the mere fact of the existence of some extremely minute organisms in different decaying materials. Nor did the 19th century add much to this until toward its middle. It is true that the microscope was vastly improved early in the century, and since this improvement served as a decided stimulus to the study of microscopic life, among other organisms studied, bacteria received some attention. Ehrenberg, Dujardin, Fuchs, Perty, and others left the impress of their work upon bacteriology even before the middle of the century. It is true that Schwann shrewdly drew conclusions as to the relation of microscopic organisms to various processes of fermentation and decay—conclusions which, although not accepted at the time, have subsequently proved to be correct. It is true that Fuchs made a careful study of the infection of "blue milk," reaching the correct conclusion that the infection was caused by a microscopic organism which he discovered and carefully studied. It is true that Henle made a general theory as to the relation of such organisms to diseases, and pointed out the logically necessary steps in a demonstration of the causal connection between any organism and a disease. It is true also that a general theory of the production of ail kinds of fermentation by living organisms had been advanced. But all these suggestions made little impression. On the one hand, bacteria were not recognised as a class of organisms by themselves—were not, indeed, distinguished from yeasts or other minute animalcuise. Their variety was not mistrusted and their significance not conceived. As microscopic organisms, there were no reasons for considering them of any more importance than any other small animals or plants, and their extreme minuteness and simplicity made them of little interest to the microscopist. On the other hand, their causal connection with fermentative and putrefactive processes was entirely obscured by the overshadowing weight of the chemist Liebig, who believed that fermentations and putrefactions were simply chemical processes. Liebig insisted that all albuminoid bodies were in a state of chemically unstable equilibrium, and if left to themselves would fall to pieces without any need of the action of microscopic organisms. The force of Liebig's authority and the brilliancy of his expositions led to the wide acceptance of his views and the temporary obscurity of the relation of microscopic organisms to fermentative and putrefactive processes. The objections to Liebig's views were hardly noticed, and the force of the experiments of Schwann was silently ignored. Until the sixth decade of the century, therefore, these organisms, which have since become the basis of a new branch of science, had hardly emerged from obscurity. A few microscopists recognised their existence, just as they did any other group of small animals or plants, but even yet they failed to look upon them as forming a distinct group. A growing number of observations was accumulating, pointing toward a probable causal connection between fermentative and putrefactive processes and the growth of microscopic organisms; but these observations were known only to a few, and were ignored by the majority of scientists.
It was Louis Pasteur who brought bacteria to the front, and it was by his labours that these organisms were rescued from the obscurity of scientific publications and made objects of general and crowning interest. It was Pasteur who first successfully combated the chemical theory of fermentation by showing that albuminous matter had no inherent tendency to decomposition. It was Pasteur who first clearly demonstrated that these little bodies, like all larger animals and plants, come into existence only by ordinary methods of reproduction, and not by any spontaneous generation, as had been earlier claimed. It was Pasteur who first proved that such a common phenomenon as. the souring of milk was produced by microscopic organisms growing in the milk. It was Pasteur who first succeeded in demonstrating that certain species of microscopic organisms are the cause of certain diseases, and in suggesting successful methods of avoiding them. All these discoveries were made in rapid succession. Within ten years of the time that his name began to be heard in this connection by scientists, the subject had advanced so rapidly that it had become evident that here was a new subject of importance to the scientific world, if not to the public at large. The other important discoveries which Pasteur made it is not our purpose to mention here. His claim to be considered the founder of bacteriology will be recognised from what has already been mentioned. It was not that he first discovered the organisms, or first studied them; it was not that he first suggested their causal connection with fermentation and disease, but it was because he for the first time placed the subject upon a firm foundation by proving with rigid experiment some of the suggestions made by others, and in this way turned the attention of science to the study of micro-organisms.
After the importance of the subject had been demonstrated by Pasteur, others turned their attention in the same direction, either for the purpose of verification or refutation of Pasteur's views. The advance was not very rapid, however, since bacteriological experimentation proved to be a subject of extraordinary difficulty. Bacteria were not even yet recognised as a group of organisms distinct enough to be grouped by themselves, but were even by Pasteur at first confounded with yeasts. As a distinct group of organisms they were first distinguished by Hoffman in 1869, since which date the term bacteria, as applying to this special group of organisms, has been coming more and more into use. So difficult were the investigations, that for years there were hardly any investigators besides Pasteur who could successfully handle the subject and reach conclusions which could stand the test of time. For the next thirty years, although investigators and investigations continued to increase, we can find little besides dispute and confusion along this line. The difficulty of obtaining for experiment any one kind of bacteria by itself, unmixed with others (pure cultures), rendered advance almost impossible. So conflicting were the results that the whole subject soon came into almost hopeless confusion, and very few steps were taken upon any sure basis. So difficult were the methods, so contradictory and confusing the results, because of impure cultures, that a student of to-day who wishes to look up the previous discoveries in almost any line of bacteriology need hardly go back of 1880, since he can almost rest assured that anything done earlier than that was more likely to be erroneous than correct.
The last fifteen years have, however, seen a wonderful change. The difficulties had been mostly those of methods of work, and with the ninth decade of the century these methods were simplified by Robert Koch. This simplification of method for the first time placed this line of investigation within the reach of scientists who did not have the genius of Pasteur. It was now possible to get pure cultures easily, and to obtain with such pure cultures results which were uniform and simple. It was now possible to take steps which had the stamp of accuracy upon them, and which further experiment did not disprove. From the time when these methods were thus made manageable the study of bacteria increased with a rapidity which has been fairly startling, and the information which has accumulated is almost formidable. The very rapidity with which the investigations have progressed has brought considerable confusion, from the fact that the new discoveries have not had time to be properly assimilated into knowledge. Today many facts are known whose significance is still uncertain, and a clear logical discussion of the facts of modern bacteriology is not possible. But sufficient knowledge has been accumulated and digested to show us at least the direction along which bacteriological advance is tending, and it is to the pointing out of these directions that the following pages will be devoted.
WHAT ARE BACTERIA?
The most interesting facts connected with the subject of bacteriology concern the powers and influence in Nature possessed by the bacteria. The morphological side of the subject is interesting enough to the scientist, but to him alone. Still, it is impossible to attempt to study the powers of bacteria without knowing something of the organisms themselves. To understand how they come to play an important part in Nature's processes, we must know first how they look and where they are found. A short consideration of certain morphological facts will therefore be necessary at the start.
FORM OF BACTERIA.
In shape bacteria are the simplest conceivable structures. Although there are hundreds of different species, they have only three general forms, which have been aptly compared to billiard balls, lead pencils, and corkscrews. Spheres, rods, and spirals represent all shapes. The spheres may be large or small, and may group themselves in various ways; the rods may be long or short, thick or slender; the spirals may be loosely or tightly coiled, and may have only one or two or may have many coils, and they may be flexible or stiff; but still rods, spheres, and spirals comprise all types.In size there is some variation, though not very great. All are extremely minute, and never visible to the naked eye. The spheres vary from 0.25 u to 1.5 u (0.000012 to 0.00006 inches). The rods may be no more than 0.3 u in diameter, or may be as wide as 1.5 u to 2.5 u, and in length vary all the way from a length scarcely longer than their diameter to long threads. About the same may be said of the spiral forms. They are decidedly the smallest living organisms which our microscopes have revealed.In their method of growth we find one of the most characteristic features. They universally have the power of multiplication by simple division or fission. Each individual elongates and then divides in the middle into two similar halves, each of which then repeats the process. This method of multiplication
by simple division is the distinguishing mark which separates the bacteria from the yeasts, the latter plants multiplying by a process known as budding. Fig. 2 shows these two methods of multiplication.
While all bacteria thus multiply by division, certain differences in the details produce rather striking differences in the results. Considering first the spherical forms, we find that some species divide, as described, into two, which separate at once, and each of which in turn divides in the opposite direction, called Micrococcus, (Fig. 3). Other species divide only in one direction. Frequently they do not separate after dividing, but remain attached. Each, however, again elongates and divides again, but all still remain attached. There are thus formed long chains of spheres like strings of beads, called Streptococci (Fig. 4). Other species divide first in one direction, then at right angles to the first division, and a third division follows at right angles to the plane of the first two, thus producing solid groups of fours, eights, or sixteens (Fig 5), called Sarcina. Each different species of bacteria is uniform in its method of division, and these differences are therefore indications of differences in species, or, according to our present method of classification, the different methods of division represent different genera. All bacteria producing Streptococcus chains form a single genus Streptococcus, and all which divide in three division planes form another genus, Sarcina, etc.
The rod-shaped bacteria also differ somewhat, but to a less extent. They almost always divide in a plane at right angles to their longest dimension. But here again we find some species separating immediately after division, and thus always appearing as short rods (Fig. 6), while others remain attached after division and form long chains. Sometimes they appear to continue to increase in length without showing any signs of division, and in this way long threads are formed (Fig. 7). These threads are, however, potentially at least, long chains of short rods, and under proper conditions they will break up into such short rods, as shown in Fig. 7a. Occasionally a rod species may divide lengthwise, but this is rare. Exactly the same may be said of the spiral forms. Here, too, we find short rods and long chains, or long spiral filaments in which can be seen no division into shorter elements, but which, under certain conditions, break up into short sections.
RAPIDITY OF MULTIPLICATION.
It is this power of multiplication by division that makes bacteria agents of such significance. Their minute size would make them harmless enough if it were not for an extraordinary power of multiplication. This power of growth and division is almost incredible. Some of the species which have been carefully watched under the microscope have been found under favourable conditions to grow so rapidly as to divide every half hour
to discern different species (Fig. II). All these points of difference are of practical use to the bacteriologist in distinguishing species.
, or even less. The number of offspring that would result in the course of twenty-four hours at this rate is of course easily computed. In one day each bacterium would produce over 16,500,000 descendants, and in two days about 281,500,000,000. It has been further calculated that these 281,500,000,000 would form about a solid pint of bacteria and weigh about a pound. At the end of the third day the total descendants would amount to 47,000,000,000,000, and would weigh about 16,000,000 pounds. Of course these numbers have no significance, for they are never actual or even possible numbers. Long before the offspring reach even into the millions their rate of multiplication is checked either by lack of food or by the accumulation of their own excreted products, which are injurious to them. But the figures do have interest since they show faintly what an unlimited power of multiplication these organisms have, and thus show us that in dealing with bacteria we are dealing with forces of almost infinite extent.
This wonderful power of growth is chiefly due to the fact that bacteria feed upon food which is highly organized and already in condition for absorption. Most plants must manufacture their own foods out of simpler substances, like carbonic dioxide (Co2) and water, but bacteria, as a rule, feed upon complex organic material already prepared by the previous life of plants or animals. For this reason they can grow faster than other plants. Not being obliged to make their own foods like most plants, nor to search for it like animals, but living in its midst, their rapidity of growth and multiplication is limited only by their power to seize and assimilate this food. As they grow in such masses of food, they cause certain chemical changes to take place in it, changes doubtless directly connected with their use of the material as food. Recognising that they do cause chemical changes in food material, and remembering this marvellous power of growth, we are prepared to believe them capable of producing changes wherever they get a foothold and begin to grow. Their power of feeding upon complex organic food and producing chemical changes therein, together with their marvellous power of assimilating this material as food, make them agents in Nature of extreme importance.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DIFFERENT SPECIES OF BACTERIA.
While bacteria are thus very simple in form, there are a few other slight variations in detail which assist in distinguishing them. The rods are sometimes very blunt at the ends, almost as if cut square across, while in other species they are more rounded and occasionally slightly tapering. Sometimes they are surrounded by a thin layer of some gelatinous substance, which forms what is called a capsule (Fig. 10). This capsule may connect them and serve as a cement, to prevent the separate elements of a chain from falling apart.
Sometimes such a gelatinous secretion will unite great masses of bacteria into clusters, which may float on the surface of the liquid in which they grow or may sink to the bottom. Such masses are called zoogloea, and their general appearance serves as one of the characters for distinguishing different species of bacteria (Fig. 10, a and b). When growing in solid media, such as a nutritious liquid made stiff with gelatine, the different species have different methods of spreading from their central point of origin. A single bacterium in the midst of such a stiffened mass will feed upon it and produce descendants rapidly; but these descendants, not being able to move through the gelatine, will remain clustered together in a mass, which the bacteriologist calls a colony. But their method of clustering, due to different methods of growth, is by no means always alike, and these colonies show great differences in general appearance. The differences appear to be constant, however, for the same species of bacteria, and hence the shape and appearance of the colony enable bacteriologists
SPORE FORMATION.
In addition to their power of reproduction by simple division, many species of bacteria have a second method by means of spores. Spores are special rounded or oval bits of bacteria protoplasm capable of resisting adverse conditions which would destroy the ordinary bacteria. They arise among bacteria in two different methods.
Endogenous spores.—These spores arise inside of the rods or the spiral forms (Fig. 12). They first appear as slight granular masses, or as dark points which become gradually distinct from the rest of the rod. Eventually there is thus formed inside the rod a clear, highly refractive, spherical or oval spore, which may even be of a greater diameter than the rod producing it, thus causing it to swell out and become spindle formed [Fig. 12 c]. These spores may form in the middle or at the ends of the rods (Fig. 12). They may use up all the protoplasm of the rod in their formation, or they may use only a small part of it, the rod which forms them continuing its activities in spite of the formation of the spores within it. They are always clear and highly refractive from containing little water, and they do not so readily absorb staining material as the ordinary rods. They appear to be covered with a layer of some substance which resists the stain, and which also enables them to resist various external agencies. This protective covering, together with their small amount of water, enables them to resist almost any amount of drying, a high degree of heat, and many other adverse conditions. Commonly the spores break out of the rod, and the rod producing them dies, although sometimes the rod may continue its activity even after the spores have been produced.
Arthrogenous spores (?).—Certain species of bacteria do not produce spores as just described, but may give rise to bodies that are sometimes called arthrospores. These bodies are formed as short segments of rods. A long rod may sometimes break up into several short rounded elements, which are clear and appear to have a somewhat increased power of resisting adverse conditions. The same may happen among the spherical forms, which only in rare instances form endogenous spores. Among the spheres which form a chain of streptococci some may occasionally be slightly different from the rest. They are a little larger, and have been thought to have an increased resisting power like that of true spores (Fig. 13 b). It is quite doubtful, however, whether it is proper to regard these bodies as spores. There is no good evidence that they have any special resisting power to heat like endogenous spores, and bacteriologists in general are inclined to regard them simply as resting cells. The term arthrospores has been given to them to indicate that they are formed as joints or segments, and this term may be a convenient one to retain although the bodies in question are not true spores.
Still a different method of spore formation occurs in a few peculiar bacteria. In this case (Fig. 14) the protoplasm in the large thread breaks into many minute spherical bodies, which finally find exit. The spores thus formed may not be all alike, differences in size being noticed. This method of spore formation occurs only in a few special forms of bacteria.
The matter of spore formation serves as one of the points for distinguishing species. Some species do not form spores, at least under any of the conditions in which they have been studied. Others form them readily in almost any condition, and others again only under special conditions which are adverse to their life. The method of spore formation is always uniform for any single species. Whatever be the method of the formation of the spore, its purpose in the life of the bacterium is always the same. It serves as a means of keeping the species alive under conditions of adversity. Its power of resisting heat or drying enables it to live where the ordinary active forms would be speedily killed. Some of these spores are capable of resisting a heat of 180 degrees C. (360 degrees F.) for a short time, and boiling water they can resist for a long time. Such spores when subsequently placed under favourable conditions will germinate and start bacterial activity anew.

CHAPITRE I.
BACTÉRIES COMME PLANTE
Le sujet de la bactériologie [Note: Le terme microbe est simplement un mot qui a été inventé pour englober toutes les plantes microscopiques communément comprises sous les termes bactéries et levures.] s'est développé à une très grande vitesse durant les quinze dernières années,. Au début de la neuvième décennie du siècle, on parlait très peu des bactéries en dehors des cercles scientifiques, et même les scientifiques en savaient très peu sur elles.
Aujourd'hui, elles font partie du vocabulaire familier et toute personne instruite commence à reconnaître qu'elles ont un rapport très étroit avec sa vie quotidienne. Les organismes appelés bactéries ne comprennent qu'une petite classe de plantes basses, mais ce petit groupe s'est révélé d'une telle importance dans ses rapports avec le monde en général que son étude s'est peu à peu cristallisée en une science à part entière. C'est un fait quelque peu anormal qu'une branche spéciale de la science, intéressant un si grand nombre de personnes, se soit développée autour d'un petit groupe de plantes basses. L'importance de la bactériologie n'est pas due à l'importance qu'ont les bactéries en tant que plantes ou en tant que membres du règne végétal, mais uniquement à leur pouvoir à effectuer de profonds changements dans la nature. Il n'y a pas une seule famille de plantes qui pourrait lui être égale en importance. L'objet de ce travail est de montrer brièvement combien de bien et de mal nous devons à la vie et à la croissance de ces organismes microscopiques. Comme nous en avons appris de plus en plus au cours des cinquante dernières années, il est devenu de plus en plus évident que cette petite classe de plantes microscopiques occupe une place dans les processus de la nature qui, à certains égards, équilibre celle remplie par l'ensemble des plantes vertes. . Aussi minuscules soient-elles, leur importance ne peut guère être surestimée, car leurs activités constituent la base sur laquelle la vie continue du règne animal et végétal est fondé. Pour le meilleur et pour le pire, ils sont des agents de pouvoirs incessants et presque illimités.
HISTORIQUE.
L'étude des bactéries a pratiquement commencé avec l'utilisation du microscope. C'est vers la fin du dix-septième siècle que le microscopiste hollandais Leeuwenhoek, travaillant avec ses simples lentilles, vit pour la première fois les organismes que nous connaissons aujourd'hui sous ce nom, avec suffisamment de netteté pour les décrire. Au-delà de la mention de leur existence, ses observations ne disaient rien ou presque. On ne peut pas non plus en dire beaucoup plus des études qui ont suivi au cours des cent cinquante années suivantes. Pendant cette longue période, bien des microscopes furent tournés vers l'observation de ces organismes minuscules, mais la plupart des observateurs se contentèrent de les voir simplement, s'émerveillant de leur petitesse et poussant de nombreuses exclamations d'étonnement devant les merveilles de la nature. Quelques hommes de nature plus strictement scientifique prêtèrent une certaine attention à ces petits organismes. Parmi eux, il faut peut-être citer Von Gleichen, Muller, Spallanzani et Needham. Chacun d'eux, ainsi que d'autres, a contribué à notre connaissance de la vie microscopique, et parmi d'autres organismes ont étudié ceux que nous appelons aujourd'hui bactéries. Des spéculations ont même été faites à ces premières dates sur un eventuel lien de causalité de ces organismes avec des maladies, et pendant un certain temps, la medecine s'est intéressée à la suggestion. Il était alors impossible, cependant, d'obtenir la moindre preuve de la véracité de cette spéculation, et elle a été abandonnée comme non fondée, et même complètement oubliée, jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit relancée vers le milieu du 19e siècle.
Au cours de ce siècle d'émerveillement, une suffisante précision a cependant été introduite dans l'étude des organismes microscopiques pour appeler à l'utilisation de noms, et nous trouvons Muller utilisant les noms de Monas, Proteus, Vibrio, Bacillus et Spirillum, noms qui continuent d'être utilisés, bien que généralement avec une signification différente de celle que leur a donnée Muller. Muller fit en effet une étude suffisante pour reconnaître les différents types distincts, et tenta de classer ces corps qui n'étaient pas considérés comme d'une grande importance, mais simplement comme les plus minuscules organismes connus.
Cependant, rien d'important n'est sorti de ce travail, en partie à cause de l'insuffisance des microscopes de l'époque, et en partie à cause d'une incapacité à comprendre les vrais problèmes en cause. Quand on se souvient de la petitesse de la bactérie, de l'impossibilité d'étudier l'une d'entre elles plus de quelques instants à la fois, seulement le temps, en fait, qu'on puisse la suivre au microscope ; quand on se souvient aussi de l'imperfection des microscopes composés qui rendait les grandes puissances impossibles dans la pratique ; et, surtout, quand nous apprécions le flou des idées qui envahissaient tous les scientifiques quant à la nécessité d'une observation précise à la différence de l'inférence, il n'est pas étrange que le siècle dernier ne nous ait donné aucune connaissance des bactéries au-delà du simple fait de l'existence de certains organismes extrêmement minuscules dans différents matériaux en décomposition. Le XIXe siècle n'y a pas non plus ajouté grand-chose jusqu'à son milieu. Il est vrai que le microscope a été considérablement amélioré au début du siècle, et comme cette amélioration a servi de stimulant décisif à l'étude de la vie microscopique, parmi d'autres organismes étudiés, les bactéries ont reçu une certaine attention. Ehrenberg, Dujardin, Fuchs, Perty et d'autres ont laissé l'empreinte de leurs travaux sur la bactériologie avant même le milieu du siècle. Il est vrai que Schwann a astucieusement tiré des conclusions quant à la relation des organismes microscopiques avec divers processus de fermentation et de décomposition, conclusions qui, bien qu'elles n'aient pas été acceptées à l'époque, se sont révélées exactes par la suite. Il est vrai que Fuchs a fait une étude minutieuse de l'infection du "lait bleu", parvenant à la conclusion correcte que l'infection était causée par un organisme microscopique qu'il a découvert et soigneusement étudié. Il est vrai que Henle a fait une théorie générale sur la relation de tels organismes avec les maladies, et a souligné les étapes logiquement nécessaires dans une démonstration du lien causal entre tout organisme et une maladie. Il est vrai aussi qu'une théorie générale de la production de toutes les sortes de fermentation par les organismes vivants avait été avancée. Mais toutes ces suggestions firent peu d'effet. D'une part, les bactéries n'étaient pas reconnues comme une classe d'organismes à part entière - elles ne se distinguaient pas, en effet, des levures ou d'autres petites viandes animales. On ne s'est pas méfié de leur variété et leur signification n'a pas été conçue. En tant qu'organismes microscopiques, il n'y avait aucune raison de les considérer comme plus importants que n'importe quel autre petit animal ou plante, et leur extrême minutie et leur simplicité les rendaient de peu d'intérêt pour le microscopiste. D'autre part, leur lien causal avec les processus fermentatifs et putréfactifs était entièrement obscurci par le poids écrasant du chimiste Liebig, qui croyait que les fermentations et les putréfactions n'étaient que des processus chimiques. Liebig a insisté sur le fait que tous les corps albuminoïdes étaient dans un état d'équilibre chimiquement instable, et s'ils étaient laissés à eux-mêmes, ils tomberaient en morceaux sans aucun besoin de l'action d'organismes microscopiques. La force de l'autorité de Liebig et l'éclat de ses exposés ont conduit à la large acceptation de ses vues et à l'obscurité temporaire de la relation des organismes microscopiques aux processus de fermentation et de putréfaction. Les objections aux vues de Liebig ont été à peine remarquées, et la force des expériences de Schwann a été silencieusement ignorée. Jusqu'à la sixième décennie du siècle, donc, ces organismes, devenues depuis la base d'une nouvelle branche de la science, sortaient à peine de l'obscurité. Quelques microscopistes ont reconnu leur existence, tout comme ils l'ont fait pour n'importe quel autre groupe de petits animaux ou de plantes, mais même encore ils ne les ont pas considérés comme formant un groupe distinct. Un nombre croissant d'observations s'accumulaient, pointant vers un lien de causalité probable entre les processus de fermentation et de putréfaction et la croissance d'organismes microscopiques ; mais ces observations n'étaient connues que de quelques-uns et ignorées par la majorité des scientifiques.
C'est Louis Pasteur qui a mis les bactéries au premier plan, et c'est par ses travaux que ces organismes ont été sauvés de l'obscurité des publications scientifiques et en ont fait des objets d'intérêt général et suprême. C'est Pasteur qui a le premier combattu avec succès la théorie chimique de la fermentation en montrant que la matière albuminée n'avait pas de tendance inhérente à la décomposition. C'est Pasteur qui le premier a clairement démontré que ces petits corps, comme tous les animaux et plantes plus grands, ne naissent que par des méthodes ordinaires de reproduction, et non par une génération spontanée, comme on l'avait prétendu auparavant. C'est Pasteur qui a le premier prouvé qu'un phénomène aussi courant que. l'acidification du lait était produite par des organismes microscopiques se développant dans le lait. C'est Pasteur qui réussit le premier à démontrer que certaines espèces d'organismes microscopiques sont la cause de certaines maladies et à suggérer des méthodes efficaces pour les éviter. Toutes ces découvertes ont été faites en succession rapide. Dans les dix ans qui ont suivi le moment où son nom a commencé à être entendu à cet égard par les scientifiques, le sujet avait progressé si rapidement qu'il était devenu évident qu'il s'agissait là d'un nouveau sujet d'importance pour le monde scientifique, sinon pour le grand public. . Les autres découvertes importantes que Pasteur a faites, ce n'est pas notre propos de les mentionner ici. Sa prétention à être considéré comme le fondateur de la bactériologie sera reconnue d'après ce qui a déjà été mentionné. Ce n'est pas qu'il ait d'abord découvert les organismes, ou qu'il les ait d'abord étudiés ; ce n'est pas qu'il ait suggéré pour la première fois leur lien causal avec la fermentation et la maladie, mais c'est parce qu'il a pour la première fois placé le sujet sur une base solide en prouvant par une expérience rigide certaines des suggestions faites par d'autres, et de cette manière attention de la science à l'étude des micro-organismes.
Après que l'importance du sujet eut été démontrée par Pasteur, d'autres tournèrent leur attention dans la même direction, soit dans le but de vérifier, soit de réfuter les vues de Pasteur. L'avancée n'a cependant pas été très rapide, car l'expérimentation bactériologique s'est révélée être un sujet d'une extraordinaire difficulté. Les bactéries n'étaient même pas encore reconnues comme un groupe d'organismes assez distincts pour être groupés par eux-mêmes, mais furent même d'abord confondues par Pasteur avec les levures. En tant que groupe distinct d'organismes, ils ont été distingués pour la première fois par Hoffman en 1869, date depuis laquelle le terme bactérie, appliqué à ce groupe spécial d'organismes, est de plus en plus utilisé.
Les quinze dernières années ont cependant vu un merveilleux changement. Les difficultés avaient été principalement celles des méthodes de travail, et avec la neuvième décennie du siècle, ces méthodes ont été simplifiées par Robert Koch. Cette simplification de méthode mettait pour la première fois cette voie d'investigation à la portée de savants qui n'avaient pas le génie de Pasteur. Il était désormais possible d'obtenir facilement des cultures pures, et d'obtenir avec ces cultures pures des résultats uniformes et simples. Il était maintenant possible de prendre des mesures qui portaient le sceau de l'exactitude, et que d'autres expériences n'ont pas réfutées. Depuis que ces méthodes ont été ainsi rendues maniables, l'étude des bactéries s'est accrue avec une rapidité qui a été assez surprenante, et les informations qui s'y sont accumulées sont presque formidables. La rapidité même avec laquelle les recherches ont progressé a apporté une confusion considérable, du fait que les nouvelles découvertes n'ont pas eu le temps d'être correctement assimilées à la connaissance. Aujourd'hui, de nombreux faits sont connus dont la signification est encore incertaine, et une discussion logique claire des faits de la bactériologie moderne n'est pas possible. Mais suffisamment de connaissances ont été accumulées et digérées pour nous montrer au moins dans quelle direction tend le progrès bactériologique, et c'est à l'indication de ces directions que seront consacrées les pages suivantes.
QU'EST-CE QUE LES BACTÉRIES ?
Les faits les plus intéressants liés au sujet de la bactériologie concernent les pouvoirs et l'influence dans la nature possédés par les bactéries. Le côté morphologique du sujet est assez intéressant pour le scientifique, mais pour lui seul. Pourtant, il est impossible de tenter d'étudier les pouvoirs des bactéries sans connaître quelque chose des organismes eux-mêmes. Pour comprendre comment ils en viennent à jouer un rôle important dans les processus de la nature, nous devons d'abord savoir à quoi ils ressemblent et où ils se trouvent. Une brève considération de certains faits morphologiques sera donc nécessaire au départ.
FORME DE BACTÉRIES.
En forme, les bactéries sont les structures imaginables les plus simples. Bien qu'il existe des centaines d'espèces différentes, elles n'ont que trois formes générales, qui ont été comparées à juste titre aux boules de billard, aux crayons à papier et aux tire-bouchons. Les sphères, les tiges et les spirales représentent toutes les formes. Les sphères peuvent être grandes ou petites, et peuvent se grouper de diverses manières ; les tiges peuvent être longues ou courtes, épaisses ou fines ; les spirales peuvent être enroulées de manière lâche ou serrée, et peuvent n'avoir qu'une ou deux spires ou peuvent avoir plusieurs spires, et elles peuvent être flexibles ou rigides; mais les tiges, les sphères et les spirales comprennent toujours tous les types. Dans la taille, il y a une certaine variation, mais pas très grande. Tous sont extrêmement minutieux et jamais visibles à l'œil nu. Les sphères varient de 0,25 u à 1,5 u (0,000012 à 0,00006 pouces). Les tiges peuvent ne pas avoir plus de 0,3 u de diamètre, ou peuvent être aussi larges que 1,5 u à 2,5 u, et leur longueur varie d'une longueur à peine supérieure à leur diamètre à de longs fils. On peut dire à peu près la même chose des formes en spirale. Ce sont décidément les plus petits organismes vivants que nos microscopes aient révélés.
Dans leur méthode de croissance, nous trouvons l'un des traits les plus caractéristiques. Ils ont universellement le pouvoir de multiplication par simple division ou fission. Chaque individu s'allonge puis se divise au milieu en deux moitiés similaires, dont chacune répète ensuite le processus. Cette méthode de multiplication
par simple division est le signe distinctif qui sépare les bactéries des levures, ces dernières plantes se multipliant par un processus appelé bourgeonnement. La figure 2 montre ces deux méthodes de multiplication.
Tandis que toutes les bactéries se multiplient ainsi par division, certaines différences dans les détails produisent des différences assez frappantes dans les résultats. Considérant d'abord les formes sphériques, nous constatons que certaines espèces se divisent, comme décrit, en deux, qui se séparent à la fois, et dont chacun à son tour se divise dans la direction opposée, appelée Micrococcus, (Fig. 3). D'autres espèces ne se divisent que dans une seule direction. Souvent, ils ne se séparent pas après la division, mais restent attachés. Chacun, cependant, s'allonge à nouveau et se divise à nouveau, mais tous restent toujours attachés. Il se forme ainsi de longues chaînes de sphères comme des chapelets de perles, appelées streptocoques (fig. 4). D'autres espèces se divisent d'abord dans une direction, puis à angle droit par rapport à la première division, et une troisième division suit à angle droit par rapport au plan des deux premières, produisant ainsi des groupes solides de quatre, huit ou seize (Fig 5), appelée Sarcine. Chaque espèce différente de bactérie est uniforme dans sa méthode de division, et ces différences sont donc des indications de différences d'espèces, ou, selon notre méthode actuelle de classification, les différentes méthodes de division représentent différents genres. Toutes les bactéries produisant des chaînes Streptococcus forment un seul genre Streptococcus, et toutes celles qui se divisent en trois plans de division forment un autre genre, Sarcina, etc.
Les bactéries en forme de bâtonnet diffèrent également quelque peu, mais dans une moindre mesure. Ils se divisent presque toujours dans un plan perpendiculaire à leur dimension la plus longue. Mais ici encore nous trouvons des espèces se séparant immédiatement après la division, et apparaissant ainsi toujours sous forme de bâtonnets courts (Fig. 6), tandis que d'autres restent attachées après la division et forment de longues chaînes. Parfois, ils semblent continuer à augmenter en longueur sans montrer aucun signe de division, et de cette façon de longs fils se forment (Fig. 7). Ces fils sont, cependant, potentiellement au moins, de longues chaînes de tiges courtes, et dans des conditions appropriées, ils se briseront en de telles tiges courtes, comme le montre la figure 7a. Parfois, une espèce de bâtonnet peut se diviser dans le sens de la longueur, mais cela est rare. Exactement la même chose peut être dite des formes en spirale. Ici aussi, nous trouvons des tiges courtes et de longues chaînes, ou de longs filaments spiralés dans lesquels on ne voit aucune division en éléments plus courts, mais qui, dans certaines conditions, se brisent en sections courtes.
RAPIDITÉ DE MULTIPLICATION.
C'est ce pouvoir de multiplication par division qui fait des bactéries des agents d'une telle importance. Leur petite taille les rendrait assez inoffensifs s'il n'y avait pas un extraordinaire pouvoir de multiplication. Ce pouvoir de croissance et de division est presque incroyable. Certaines des espèces qui ont été soigneusement observés au microscope ont été trouvés dans des conditions favorables à se développer si rapidement qu'à diviser toutes les demi-heures, ou e, voire moins. Le nombre de descendants qui résulterait au cours de vingt-quatre heures à ce taux est bien sûr facilement calculable. En un jour, chaque bactérie produirait plus de 16 500 000 descendants et en deux jours environ 281 500 000 000. Il a en outre été calculé que ces 281 500 000 000 formeraient environ une pinte solide de bactéries et pèseraient environ une livre. À la fin du troisième jour, le nombre total de descendants s'élèverait à 47 000 000 000 000 et pèserait environ 16 000 000 de livres. Bien sûr, ces nombres n'ont aucune signification, car ils ne sont jamais des nombres réels ou même possibles. Bien avant que la progéniture n'atteigne
même dans les millions, leur taux de multiplication est freiné soit par le manque de nourriture, soit par l'accumulation de leurs propres produits d'excrétion, qui leur sont nuisibles. Mais les chiffres ont de l'intérêt puisqu'ils montrent faiblement quel pouvoir illimité de multiplication possèdent ces organismes, et nous montrent ainsi qu'en traitant de bactéries nous avons affaire à des forces d'une étendue presque infinie.Ce merveilleux pouvoir de croissance est principalement dû au fait que les bactéries se nourrissent d'aliments hautement organisés et déjà en état d'être absorbés. La plupart des plantes doivent fabriquer leurs propres aliments à partir de substances plus simples, comme le dioxyde de carbone (Co2) et l'eau, mais les bactéries, en règle générale, se nourrissent de matières organiques complexes déjà préparées par la vie antérieure des plantes ou des animaux. Pour cette raison, ils peuvent pousser plus vite que les autres plantes. N'étant pas obligés de fabriquer leur propre nourriture comme la plupart des plantes, ni de la chercher comme les animaux, mais vivant au milieu d'elle, leur rapidité de croissance et de multiplication n'est limitée que par leur pouvoir de saisir et d'assimiler cette nourriture. A mesure qu'ils grandissent dans de telles masses de nourriture, ils y provoquent certains changements chimiques, changements sans doute directement liés à l'utilisation qu'ils font de la matière comme nourriture. Reconnaissant qu'ils provoquent des changements chimiques dans les aliments et nous souvenant de ce merveilleux pouvoir de croissance, nous sommes prêts à les croire capables de produire des changements partout où ils s'implantent et commencent à se développer. Leur pouvoir de se nourrir d'aliments organiques complexes et d'y produire des modifications chimiques, ainsi que leur merveilleux pouvoir d'assimiler ce matériau comme nourriture, en font des agents d'une extrême importance dans la Nature.
DIFFÉRENCES ENTRE DIFFÉRENTES ESPÈCES DE BACTÉRIES.
Bien que les bactéries aient donc une forme très simple, il existe quelques autres légères variations de détail qui aident à les distinguer. Les tiges sont parfois très émoussées aux extrémités, presque comme si elles étaient coupées carrément, tandis que chez d'autres espèces, elles sont plus arrondies et parfois légèrement effilées. Parfois, ils sont entourés d'une mince couche d'une substance gélatineuse, qui forme ce qu'on appelle une capsule (Fig. 10). Cette capsule peut les relier et servir de ciment, pour empêcher les éléments séparés d'une chaîne de se désagréger.
Parfois, une telle sécrétion gélatineuse réunira de grandes masses de bactéries en grappes, qui peuvent flotter à la surface du liquide dans lequel elles se développent ou peuvent couler au fond. Ces masses sont appelées zoogloea, et leur aspect général est l'un des caractères permettant de distinguer différentes espèces de bactéries (Fig. 10, a et b). Lorsqu'elles poussent dans des milieux solides, comme un liquide nutritif rendu rigide avec de la gélatine, les différentes espèces ont différentes méthodes de propagation à partir de leur point d'origine central. Une seule bactérie au milieu d'une telle masse raidie s'en nourrira et produira rapidement des descendants ; mais ces descendants, ne pouvant se mouvoir dans la gélatine, resteront agglutinés en une masse que le bactériologiste appelle une colonie. Mais leur méthode de regroupement, due à des méthodes de croissance différentes, n'est pas toujours la même, et ces colonies présentent de grandes différences dans l'aspect général. Les différences semblent être constantes, cependant, pour la même espèce de bactéries, et donc la forme et l'apparence de la colonie permettent aux bactériologistes
FORMATION DE SPORES.
En plus de leur pouvoir de reproduction par simple division, de nombreuses espèces de bactéries ont une deuxième méthode au moyen de spores. Les spores sont des morceaux spéciaux arrondis ou ovales de protoplasme bactérien capables de résister à des conditions défavorables qui détruiraient les bactéries ordinaires. Ils surviennent parmi les bactéries de deux manières différentes.
Spores endogènes.—Ces spores surviennent à l'intérieur des bâtonnets ou des formes en spirale (Fig. 12). Ils apparaissent d'abord sous forme de légères masses granuleuses, ou sous forme de points sombres qui se distinguent peu à peu du reste de la tige. Finalement, il se forme ainsi à l'intérieur de la tige une spore claire, hautement réfringente, sphérique ou ovale, qui peut même être d'un diamètre supérieur à la tige qui la produit, la faisant ainsi gonfler et devenir fusiforme [Fig. 12c]. Ces spores peuvent se former au milieu ou aux extrémités des bâtonnets (Fig. 12). Ils peuvent utiliser tout le protoplasme du bâtonnet dans leur formation, ou ils peuvent n'en utiliser qu'une petite partie, le bâtonnet qui les forme continuant ses activités malgré la formation des spores en son sein. Ils sont toujours clairs et hautement réfringents car ils contiennent peu d'eau, et ils n'absorbent pas aussi facilement le matériau de coloration que les bâtonnets ordinaires. Ils semblent être recouverts d'une couche d'une substance qui résiste à la tache, et qui leur permet également de résister à divers agents extérieurs. Ce revêtement protecteur, associé à leur faible quantité d'eau, leur permet de résister à presque n'importe quelle quantité de séchage, à un degré élevé de chaleur et à de nombreuses autres conditions défavorables. Généralement, les spores sortent du bâtonnet et le bâtonnet qui les produit meurt, bien que parfois le bâtonnet puisse continuer son activité même après la production des spores.
Spores arthrogènes (?).—Certaines espèces de bactéries ne produisent pas de spores comme nous venons de le décrire, mais peuvent donner naissance à des corps parfois appelés arthrospores. Ces corps sont formés comme de courts segments de tiges. Une longue tige peut parfois se décomposer en plusieurs petits éléments arrondis, qui sont clairs et semblent avoir un pouvoir quelque peu accru de résistance aux conditions défavorables. La même chose peut se produire parmi les formes sphériques, qui ne forment que dans de rares cas des spores endogènes. Parmi les sphères qui forment une chaîne de streptocoques, certaines peuvent parfois être légèrement différentes des autres. Ils sont un peu plus gros et on pense qu'ils ont un pouvoir de résistance accru comme celui des vraies spores (Fig. 13 b). Il est cependant tout à fait douteux qu'il soit convenable de considérer ces corps comme des spores. Rien ne prouve qu'ils aient un pouvoir spécial de résistance à la chaleur comme les spores endogènes, et les bactériologistes en général sont enclins à les considérer simplement comme des cellules au repos. Le terme d'arthrospores leur a été donné pour indiquer qu'ils sont formés sous forme d'articulations ou de segments, et ce terme peut être commode à retenir bien que les corps en question ne soient pas de véritables spores.
Encore une méthode différente de formation de spores se produit dans quelques bactéries particulières. Dans ce cas (Fig. 14) le protoplasme dans le gros fil se brise en plusieurs petits corps sphériques, qui finissent par trouver la sortie. Les spores ainsi formées peuvent ne pas être toutes semblables, des différences de taille étant remarquées. Cette méthode de formation de spores ne se produit que dans quelques formes particulières de bactéries.
La question de la formation des spores est l'un des points de distinction des espèces. Certaines espèces ne forment pas de spores, du moins dans aucune des conditions dans lesquelles elles ont été étudiées. D'autres les forment facilement dans presque toutes les conditions, et d'autres encore seulement dans des conditions spéciales qui sont défavorables à leur vie. La méthode de formation des spores est toujours uniforme pour une seule espèce. Quelle que soit la méthode de formation de la spore, sa destination dans la vie de la bactérie est toujours la même. Il sert de moyen de maintenir l'espèce en vie dans des conditions d'adversité. Son pouvoir de résistance à la chaleur ou au dessèchement lui permet de vivre là où les formes actives ordinaires seraient rapidement tuées. Certaines de ces spores sont capables de résister à une chaleur de 180 degrés C (360 degrés F) pendant une courte période et à l'eau bouillante, elles peuvent résister pendant une longue période. Ces spores, lorsqu'elles sont ensuite placées dans des conditions favorables, germeront et recommenceront l'activité bactérienne.
