Translation - English Dear Sir/Madam,
I have recently taken up residence in the United Kingdom and have heard that I will either have to pass the British driving test or have my German driving licence recognised in the UK. Could you advise me accordingly and tell me what the best approach is? I would also be grateful if you could inform me about the current insurance system in the UK. Is it compulsory to take out motor vehicle insurance, and are there penalties if one drives without insurance coverage?
Since different countries have distinct regulations on the maximum permitted blood alcohol concentration while driving, could you tell me what the legal limit is in the UK? Is one required to provide a blood sample if requested to do so by the police? I have a fear of needles. Please also tell me which authority is responsible for the registration and maintenance of motor vehicles. I have been told that cars need an MOT test. Could you explain to me what that is? I would also like information about the taxation system for motor vehicles. Are there any tax reliefs for zero-emission or low-emission cars?
If I were to apply for a British driving licence, would I then have to take both the theoretical and the practical test? I would like to ship my car from Germany via container, but it is a left-hand drive. Is there a law which prohibits driving left-hand drive vehicles on British roads?
One last question - there seem to be differences between German and British traffic regulations in regards to speed limits and fines. Do you have information on the main speed limits for the different types of roads?
Thank you for your help. Sincerely,

I’m a seasoned, dedicated and professional linguist, and have spent the majority of my life working with and learning languages. Being brought up just outside Edinburgh, Scotland, I was raised bilingually in English and Scots, starting a life-long passion for language. I then started learning German and French at school, and later continued my language studies into university. I’m now in my final year of a MA French and German (Hons) degree at the University of Edinburgh where I’m researching for a dissertation on disability within 20th century Germany. I have a Certificate in Translation (CertTrans) from the Chartered Institute of Linguists, where I'm also a registered associate (ACIL).
I’ve been lucky enough to win awards for my language skills, such as the SCP Student of the Year in Modern Languages at Edinburgh College, as well as three prizes from the German Consulate in Edinburgh for ‘outstanding achievements in learning German’. In addition to studying languages at the University of Edinburgh, I studied German at the Open University part-time while in high school, and I spent the summer of 2019 studying the German language, culture and history at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (Humboldt University Berlin) thanks to a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service). I’ve also had the great fortune to travel around and experience various areas of France, Belgium and Germany.
I also have experience working in IT, spending my summer holidays at school working at Millersoft Ltd. There I was able to use my language skills to create multilingual marketing videos for clients. This path also gave me a good foundation in working in the IT sector, basic coding skills, website design and management, handling of private information, and many more skills which translate well into the translation sector, especially into localisation of apps and websites.
