Gardens and people in anthropology: an analytical framework
Anthropological studies have shown that people's interaction with their environment forms the foundation of their social practices and their understandings of their own society or social systems. Activities in the gardens connect men and women to their plants and holistically to their environment through a systemic process. In Tukanoan gardens for example, when the clearing is done and the soil is ready to be planted, a shaman arrives to say fertility spells and spit here and there in the garden, which is a symbolic act of insemination (Reichel-Dolmatoff 1996:67). Tuzin (2001:14) and Sillitoe (1999:205) also take a new approach to analyse the Melanesian ecosystem. They state that Melanesian nature is a result of a long cultural history and they argue that indigenous economies previously seen as instances of adaptive responses are in fact the historical result of a cultural transformation of nature.
Ingold prefers a phenomenological approach when describing the two ways of procuring livelihood from the natural environment, `collection' and `production'. He takes the approach of cultural ecology and connects natural surroundings of human beings to describe production - but of a different kind. He describes production and consumption are twin facets of a mutually constitutive and continually evolving field of relationships between persons and their environments. There are similarities between Baleés analysis on historical ecology and Descola and Ingold's opinions on the relationship between people and environment in cultural ecology. Their common argument suggest that this relationship is historically grounded in a continuous process of engagement supported by various "collaborative agents", such as culture and values, general vision, and ecological possibilities.
Descola takes the approach of symbolic representation of society to describe Amazonia's cultural ecology. He describes how the Achuar people's connection and relationship with nature through plants is based on a model of `consanguinal' relationship (Descola 2001:98). For example, motherhood extends to a woman's relationship with the plants she grows in the garden through a model of consanguine relations. Achuar women give birth in the garden where they daily reproduce vegetal beings, and look after the garden plants just as same as they take care of their children (ibid:268). The right of putative motherhood over cultivated plants is rooted in the gardens. Ewert (2000) and Rival (1998) have taken a slightly different stance. They argue that people connect to their gardens in their natural environment to conceptualise the growth processes within themselves and in the society they live, such as the way the Panará connect to their peanut gardens and the Hoaorani to their manioc gardens. "Symbiotic" relations between people, plants/vegetal beings and animals are integrated in this process (Rival 1998:236).

Estudos antropológicos mostraram que a interação das pessoas com seus ambientes forma a base de suas práticas sociais e de seus entendimentos da própria sociedade ou sistema social. Atividades em jardins conectam homens e mulheres às suas plantas e holisticamente aos seus ambientes através de um processo sistêmico. Nos jardins de Tukanoan, por exemplo, quando a clareira está feita e o solo está pronto para ser plantado, um xamã chega para fazer feitiços e cuspir pelo jardim, o que é um ato simbólico de inseminação (Reichel-Dolmatoff 1996:67). Tuzin (2001:14) e Sillitoe (1999:205) também utilizam uma nova abordagem para analisar o ecossistema da Melanésia. Por exemplo, a maternidade se estende para a relação de uma mulher com as plantas que ela cultiva no jardim através de um modelo de relações consanguíneas. As mulheres do povo Achuar dão à luz no jardim onde elas diariamente cultivam vegetais, e cuidam das plantas da mesma maneira que cuidam de suas crianças (ibid:268). O direito à maternidade putativa sobre as plantas cultivadas está enraizado nos jardins. Ewert (2000) e Rival (1998) tomaram uma posição um pouco diferente. Eles argumentam que as pessoas se conectam aos seus jardins em seus ambientes naturais para conceituar o processo de crescimento dentro delas mesmas e na sociedade em que vivem, assim como o povo Panará se conecta aos seus jardins de amendoins e o povo Hoaorani aos seus jardins de mandioca. Abstract
In this article, I argue that Kierkegaard’s analysis of the self and the concept of despair introduces another approach to the self that is different from the one found in humanistic psychology. Rather than seeing the self as something organic, something universally and privately given to the individual to develop, Kierkegaard presented a dialectical and a relational understanding of the self, wherein the notion of “the other” is central. Central in Kierkegaard’s analysis in Sickness Unto Death are two modalities when it comes to despair: the despair of not willing to be oneself and the despair of willing to be oneself. Kierkegaard’s analysis of the despair of willing to be oneself can be read as a strong critique of the notion of self being constituted by itself, as argued by humanistic psychology.

Neste artigo, discuto que a análise de Kierkegaard do eu e o conceito de desespero introduzem uma outra abordagem do eu que é diferente daquela encontrada na psicologia humanista. Ao invés de ver o eu como algo orgânico, alguma coisa universalmente e privadamente dada ao indivíduo para se desenvolver, Kierkegaard apresentou um entendimento dialético e relacional do eu, no qual a noção do “outro” é central. Duas modalidades são centrais na análise de Kierkegaard em Sickness Unto Death no que se relaciona ao desespero: o desespero de não estar disposto a ser si mesmo e o desespero de estar disposto a ser si mesmo. A análise de Kierkegaard do desespero de ser si mesmo pode ser lida como uma forte crítica a noção do eu sendo constituído por si mesmo, como argumentado pela psicologia humanista.

Source text - English Sartre and Foucault: A Cross-Generational Exchange
After an early dalliance with existentialism, Foucault is assumed to
have moved away from the thought of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. As
he explained in an interview with Madeline Chapsal: “We had experienced Sartre’s generation as certainly courageous and generous with a passion for life, politics, existence.… But we had discovered something else, another passion: passion for the concept and for what I shall call ‘system.’” Of course, the career of that passion for system as well as the structuralist and poststructuralist phases through which it passed is a matter of record. But it is commonly believed that Foucault left Sartrean existentialism far behind during most of his subsequent career. His theoretical difficulties with Hegelianism, Marxism, and philosophies of consciousness over the years seemed to converge on Sartrean thought, especially on Sartre’s philosophy of history. In fact, it is said that Foucault’s editor at Gallimard insisted on the removal of many anti-Sartrean remarks from the manuscript of The Order of Things before its publication.
So it is with a certain amount of skepticism that one is prepared to greet the essays of Eshleman, Boileau, and Seitz that seek a kind of rapprochement between these two thinkers, arguably the leading philosophers of their respective generations in France. They are popularly depicted as occupying opposite poles of the philosophical globe. And yet, given the nature of the philosophical conversation in general, it seems proper for people, once challenged by counterarguments, to set aside received opinions and second-hand views in order to examine the texts once again as these three authors propose. For there is plenty of overlap in the topics that both thinkers treated, as well as in their political lives. Each wrote on Flaubert’s The Temptation of St. Anthony, for example, and both penned essays on the work of Paul Rebeyrolle that appeared in the catalogue for an exhibition of his paintings; each contributed an essay for an Italian volume on the institutionalization of prisoners and the insane, and both actively participated in protest movements on behalf of the Vietnamese Boat People and the like. In other words, despite sharp theoretical differences, they shared many aspects of a common political and moral culture. So there is reason to look for similarities in their philosophies where heretofore people have noticed only differences.
Perhaps the leading indicators of theoretical overlap are found in
Foucault’s respective Afterwords, “The Subject and Power” and
“On the Genealogy of Ethics” to the first and second editions of
Dreyfus and Rabinow’s highly successful volume on Foucault,
which Eshleman, Boileau, and Seitz cite at crucial junctures in their arguments. These Afterwords and the three essays that mention
them comprise a promising effort to reassess the contributions of
Sartrean existentialism to Foucauldian poststructuralism (for want
of a better umbrella term) as well as signifying renewed interest in
existentialist thought in general. The limitations of what has been
termed “poststructuralism” have become increasingly evident since
the deaths of Foucault, Deleuze and Lyotard. So it is at least worth
the effort to reconsider whether an all too quickly unfashionable
existentialism still might offer valuable insights for overcoming
some of these limitations and whether Foucault might be in a position to return the favor.
But the “collaboration” that Eschleman proposes, the “dialogue”
to which Boileau refers and the “linkage” which Seitz seeks to discover or perhaps to forge will not be easily achieved. So after summarizing the theses of each essay by way of introduction, I shall pose several difficulties that threaten to distort any positive communication between these two philosophical camps. My hope is that the reading of the following essays will be enhanced by considering the implicit answer that each might offer to the issues raised.

Depois de um flerte inicial com o existencialismo, presume-se que Foucault se afastou do pensamento de Sartre e Marleau-Ponty. Como explicou em uma entrevista com Madeline Chapsal: “Nós experienciamos a geração de Sartre como certamente corajosa e generosa, com uma paixão pela vida, pela política e pela existência.… Mas descobrimos algo a mais, uma outra paixão: a paixão pelo conceito e pelo que eu devo chamar de ‘sistema.’” É claro, o curso dessa paixão pelo sistema, assim como as fases estruturalistas e pós-estruturalistas pelas quais ela passou, é uma questão a ser abordada. Entretanto, comumente acredita-se que Foucault deixou o existencialismo Sartreano para trás durante a maior parte de sua subsequente carreira. Pois há uma abundância de elementos em comum nos tópicos que ambos os pensadores abordaram, bem como em suas vidas políticas. Cada um deles escreveu sobre As Tentações de Santo Anão de Flaubert, por exemplo, e ambos escreveram ensaios sobre o trabalho de Paul Rebeyrolle que apareceu no catálogo para uma exibição de suas pinturas; cada um contribui com um ensaio para um volume italiano sobre a institucionalização dos prisioneiros e dos loucos, e ambos participaram ativamente de movimentos de protesto a favor das boat people vietnamitas e seus semelhantes. Esses posfácios e os três ensaios que os mencionam incluem um esforço promissor de reavaliar as contribuições do existencialismo Sartreano para o pós-estruturalismo Foucaultiano (por falta de um termo genérico melhor), bem como de demonstrar o renovado interesse no pensamento existencialista de forma geral. As limitações daquilo que ganhou o termo “pós-estruturalismo” se tornaram cada vez mais evidentes desde as mortes de Foucault, Deleuze e Lyotard. Então, vale ao menos o esforço de reconsiderar se um existencialismo que saiu da moda muito rapidamente ainda pode oferecer reflexões valiosas com o intuito de superar algumas dessas limitações, bem como se Foucault pode estar em uma posição de recebê-lo.
Mas a “colaboração” que Eschleman propõe, o “diálogo” ao qual Boileau se refere e a “ligação” que Seitz busca descobrir ou talvez forjar não serão facilmente alcançados. Então, depois de resumir as teses de cada ensaio por meio da introdução, eu vou abordar diversas dificuldades que ameaçam distorcer qualquer comunicação positiva entre estes dois campos filosóficos. Minha esperança é de que a leitura destes ensaios será melhor aproveitada considerando a resposta implícita que cada um pode oferecer para as questões propostas.
