English to Hebrew: Hangman by Maurice Ogden
Source text - English Into our town the hangman came,
smelling of gold and blood and flame.
He paced our bricks with a different air,
and built his frame on the courthouse square.
The scaffold stood by the courthouse side,
only as wide as the door was wide
with a frame as tall, or a little more,
than the capping sill of the courthouse door.
And we wondered whenever we had the time,
Who the criminal? What the crime?
The hangman judged with the yellow twist
of knotted hemp in his busy fist.
And innocent though we were with dread,
we passed those eyes of buckshot lead.
Till one cried, "Hangman, who is he,
for whom you raised the gallows-tree?"
Then a twinkle grew in his buckshot eye
and he gave a riddle instead of reply.
"He who serves me best," said he
"Shall earn the rope on the gallows-tree."
And he stepped down and laid his hand
on a man who came from another land.
And we breathed again, for anothers grief
at the hangmans hand, was our relief.
And the gallows frame on the courthouse lawn
by tomorrow's! sun would be struck and gone.
So we gave him way and no one spoke
out of respect for his hangmans cloak.
The next day's sun looked mildly down
on roof and street in our quiet town;
and stark and black in the morning air
the gallows-tree on the courthouse square.
And the hangman stood at his usual stand
with the yellow hemp in his busy hand.
With his buckshot eye and his jaw like a pike,
and his air so knowing and business-like.
And we cried, "Hangman, have you not done,
yesterday with the alien one?"
Then we fell silent and stood amazed.
"Oh, not for him was the gallows raised."
He laughed a laugh as he looked at us,
" Do you think I've gone to all this fuss,
To hang one man? That's the thing I do.
To stretch the rope when the rope is new."
Above our silence a voice cried "Shame!"
and into our midst the hangman came;
to that mans place, "Do you hold," said he,
"With him that was meat for the gallows-tree?"
He laid his hand on that one's arm
and we shrank back in quick alarm.
We gave him way, and no one spoke,
out of fear of the hangmans cloak.
That night we saw with dread surprise
the hangmans scaffold had grown in size.
Fed by the blood beneath the chute,
the gallows-tree had taken root.
Now as wide, or a little more
than the steps that led to the courthouse door.
As tall as the writing, or nearly as tall,
half way up! on the courthouse wall.
The third he took, we had all heard tell,
was a usurer..., an infidel.
And "What" said the hangman, "Have you to do
with the gallows-bound..., and he a Jew?"
And we cried out, "Is this one he
who has served you well and faithfully?"
The hangman smiled, "It's! a clever scheme
to try the strength of the gallows beam."
The fourth man's dark accusing song
had scratched our comfort hard and long.
"And what concern," he gave us back,
"Have you ... for the doomed and black?"
The fifth, the sixth, and we cried again,
"Hangman, hangman, is! this the man?"
"It's a trick", said he, "that we hangman know
for easing the trap when the trap springs slow."
And so we ceased and asked now more
as the hangman tallied his bloody score.
And sun by sun, and night by night
the gallows grew to monstrous height.
The wings of the scaf! fold opened wide
until they covered the square from side to side.
And the monster cross beam looking down,
cast its shadow across the town.
Then through the town the hangman came
and called through the empy streets...my name.
I looked at the gallows soaring tall
and thought ... there's no one left at all
for hanging ... and so he called to me
to help take down the gallows-tree.
And I went out with right good hope
to the hangmans tree and the hangmans rope.
He smiled at me as I came down
to the courthouse! square...through the silent town.
Supple and stretched in his busy hand,
was the yellow twist of hempen strand.
He whistled his tune as he tried the trap
and it sprang down with a ready snap.
Then with a smile of awful command,
He laid his hand upon my hand.
"You tricked me Hangman." I shouted then,
! "That your scaffold was built for other men,
and I'm no henchman of yours." I cried.
"You lied to me Hangman, foully lied."
Then a twinkle grew in his buckshot eye,
"Lied to you...tricked you?" He said "Not I...
for I answered straight and told you true.
The scaffold was raised for none but you."
"For who has served more faithfully?
With your coward's hope." said He,
"And where are the others that might have stood
side by your side, in the common good?"
"Dead!" I answered, and amiably
"Murdered," the Hangman corrected me.
"First the alien ... then the Jew.
I did no more than you let me do."
Beneath the beam that blocked the sky
none before stood so alone as I.
The Hangman then strapped me...with no voice there
to cry "Stay!" ... for me in the empty square.
Translation - Hebrew התליין/ מוריס אוגדן
לעיר התליין בא נחפז,
מריח דם, אש וגם פז.
מדד אריחנו ברוח אחרת,
ובכיכר בית הדין בנה המסגרת.
הגרדום ליד בית הדין ניצב - לצידו,
כרוחב השער יהיה ממדו
ומסגרתו גבוהה או מעט יותר,
משער היכל הצדק - מהכתר.
ובכל עת פנויה העלינו פליאה
מיהו הפושע? מהי הפשיעה?
באגרופו העסוק שפט הבוס
בחבל צהוב קלוע מקנבוס.
וחפים גם אם מפוחדים היינו,
אל עיני העופרת שלו בהינו.
עד שאחד צעק, "תליין, מי הברנש
שעל עמוד התליה יענש?
אז נצנוץ גדל בעינו שבהקה
ומפיו הבריק הוא לנו הברקה.
ואמר: "זה שישרתני ולא ידום
ירוויח את חבל התלייה לגרדום".
והוא פסע למטה ובידו אוחז
באדם שמחבל אחר מפזז.
ונשמנו שוב, כי בכאב לא שלנו
בידי התליין, ניחומים אז מצאנו.
ועל המדשאה מסגרת הגרדום
עד לזריחת חמה תפורק ותידום.
אז הסתלקנו לנו ללא מילים
מתוך יראת כבוד לגלימת התולים.
השמש למחרת נראתה שכובה
על גגות ורחובות עירנו השלווה;
ברוח בוקר בשחור בערום מרופט
ניצב העץ בכיכר בית המשפט.
והתליין ניצב בעמדתו הגלמודה
עם החבל הצהוב בידו הטרודה.
עם עין העופרת וכרומח לסתו
וחיצוניות ידענית וכסוחר מבטו.
וצעקנו, " תליין, החדלת, הלא כן
אתמול עם הנוכרי של העם השכן?"
אז נעטפנו תמיהה ודומיה
" או, לא עבורו הוקם עץ התליה".
אלינו הביט ובצחוק הוא פרץ
הבזה המסד רק פור אחד נחרץ?
ודעו לכם זה מה שאני עושה.
בעודו חדש השזיר אנסה".
ומעל שתיקתנו קול צעק "כלימה!"
ובקרבנו התליין התמהמה;
להיכנס לככר , " התבינו," מסר,
"שהוא היה לעץ התליה הבשר?"
בזרועו של הצועק הוא החזיק
לאחור פסענו בלי להזיק.
הסתלקנו, מבלי שקול ישמע
מתוך חיל ויראה כלפי הגלימה.
ובזה הליל בתמיהה שעוררה חלחלה
ראינו שהגרדום במידותיו הוא עלה.
ניזון מהדם שמתחת למקום הנפילה,
היכו שורשיו של עץ הקטילה.
עתה, רחב או אף יותר, מהמדרגות
שאל דלתות ההיכל הן מדלגות.
יגיע עד לכתוב זה האילן
במחצית הקיר ימצא הזללן.
השלישי שהוא לקח, שמענו מלחשים
היה מלווה בריבית...... נושה שבנושים.
ו"איזה" שאל , "עניין תמצא ידידי
בעמוד התליה..., והוא יהודי?"
והתלוננו, "האם זהו היחידי
שאותך ירצה באופן יסודי?"
התליין חייך, "נבונה התחבולה
לבדוק את חוזקה של קורת הקטילה."
כתב אשמה אפל של הרביעי בספירה
שרט שריטה ברווחת בני העיירה.
היקשה התליין ו"מה עניין תגלו...
באדם השחור שנחרץ גורלו?"
החמישי, השישי שאלנו בקול מרעיש,
"תליין, הו, תליין, האם זהו האיש?"
"זוהי מזימה", אמר, "מוכרת במגזר
להקל על מלכודת לבצע את הנגזר".
ואז הפסקנו וביקשנו עוד עכשיו
כשהתליין ספר מניינו שמדם הוא זב.
וליל אחר ליל ויום אחר יום
צמח עץ התליה לממד איום.
כנפיי הגרדום לרוחבן נפרשו
את הכיכר מצד לצד הם כיסו.
למטה תביט קורה מפלצתית
לרוחב העיר צילה ירטיט.
והגיע התליין דרך העיירה
ומבעד לרחובות הריקים...בשמי קרא.
ניבט אלי בגובהו הנישא עמוד הדם
והרהרתי...לא נותר ולו בן אדם
לתליה... ואז על ידו נקראתי אני
לעזור להוריד את העץ הקטלני.
ויצאתי עם תקווה צודקת וראויה
לעמוד התליין ולחבל התליה.
אלי חייך כשדרך העיר השלווה
צעדי פסעו אל תוך הרחבה
בידו העסוקה דרוך וגמיש
היה השזיר הצהוב - חבל שמיש.
שרק שריקתו כשבדק המתקן
וזה קפץ מטה כהוריקן.
בחיוך מצווה צו מטיל יראה,
היד שלו על ידי מקום מצאה.
"שולל הולכת אותי " צעקתי אם כן,
"שבגרדום גברים אחרים תשכן
ואינני נושא כליך". בכיתי

"נרצחו", תיקן התליין את העיוות.
"ראשית הנוכרי...ואז היהודי.
יותר משהנחת לא עשתה ידי."

French to Hebrew: Étude d’incidence des cancers à proximité des usines d’incinération d’ordures ménagères
Source text - French 1. Introduction
1.1 L’incinération des ordures ménagères
Depuis 1970, la France a recours à l’incinération pour éliminer les
déchets ménagers et assimilés. Selon l’Ademe, en 2003, les ménages
français ont produit plus de 26 millions de tonnes de déchets
(ménagers et encombrants) dont 35 % ont été incinérés [1]. Le
nombre d’usines d’incinération d’ordures ménagères (UIOM) a diminué
depuis ces dernières années - 292 usines en 1985, 213 en 2000 et 130
en 2004 [2].
Toutefois, l’impact des rejets de l’incinération des déchets ménagers
sur la santé humaine reste un sujet d’inquiétude pour la population
française riveraine de ces installations industrielles.
Les effets néfastes sur la santé de la pollution générée par les UIOM
sont associés à la quantité et la qualité des agents chimiques émis par les cheminées. Il s’agit de mélanges complexes qui contiennent, pour l’essentiel, du dioxyde de soufre, des oxydes d’azote, de l’acide chlorhydrique, des métaux lourds, des dioxines, des particules et des hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques (HAP) [3-8]. Ces composes ont, pour la plupart, des propriétés toxiques, et certains d’entre eux ont une action cancérigène démontrée ou suspectée chez l’homme ou chez l’animal [9-17].

1.1 השריפה של אשפה ביתית
מאז 1970, צרפת מזדקקת לשירותי שרפה כדי להיפטר מפסולת ביתית ודומיה. לפי ה Ademe , בשנת 2003 משקי הבית הצרפתיים יצרו יותר מ 26 מיליון טון של פסולת (ביתית וגדולה) מתוכם 35% נשרפו [1]. מספר מפעלי שריפת הפסולת ((UIOM פחת בשנים האחרונות – 292 מפעלים ב 1985 ל 213 ב 2000 ו 130 ב 2004 [2].
אף על פי כן, ההשפעה של תוצרי הלוואי של השרפה של הפסולת הביתית על הבריאות הציבורית מהווה נושא לדאגה ביחס לאוכלוסייה הצרפתית המתגוררת בסמיכות למתקנים התעשייתיים האלו.
ההשפעות המזיקות על הבריאות כתוצאה מהזיהום הכללי על ידי UIOM קשורות לכמות ולאיכות של הגורמים הכימיים הנפלטים מהארובות. מדובר בתערובת מורכבת שמכילה, בעיקרה גופרית דו חמצנית, אוקסידים של חנקן, חומצת מימן כלורי, מתכות כבדות, חלקיקי דיאוקסינים, חלקיקים ופחמימינים ארומטיים רב טבעתיים (HAP) [3-8].. לתרכובות אלו יש ברובן תכונות רעילות , כמה מהן הוכחו כמסרטנות ואחרות חשודות כמסרטנות ביחס לאדם או החיה [9-17].
