Much busier, but not with translation! Apr 30, 2009

Sorry, but the poll question wasn't specific to translation!!

My teaching work has doubled - 0.5FTE to full time - and my mileage and driving time have more than doubled.

Sadly translation work is on a back burner. Someone sent me details of a long translation to be done quickly for a low per word payment. Someone else took it before I even got home from work.

Fortunately I enjoy my job!!!! Maybe the translation thing isn't meant to happen!

Busier...but only because I have been given a large (50K) job. Otherwise, the last 2 months have definitely been quieter than March and April in previous years.

A slow year so far Apr 30, 2009

My earnings are down 30% in the first quarter compared with last year. There have been a lot of holidays here with the Fallas festival in March, then Easter and "puentes" (tomorrow is a holiday too), which doesn't help.
This year has been quite slow in general, also for many colleagues, which we are blaming on the recession which we all hope will not last too long...

Much busier Apr 30, 2009

For the first time in months, I had to reject several projects. The projects I rejected were from one new client who had contacted me twice (this last job was an editing job of 150K or so), and the others from old clients who time ago stopped sending jobs for no apparent reason (I believe because they sought cheaper translators). These basically contacted me for urgent jobs. I also had to reject a job from one of my best clients due to my tight schedule.

Other Apr 30, 2009

The first 10 days were very slow, but then I got many orders and had to refuse quite a lot. I ended up working two weekends in a row (and will do so this long May weekend too). In the end, the turnover has been about the same as in March (which was a good and much more balanced month).

March was very slow and April is back to more then I can wish for, I have to turn down work. I am very happy since March was my lowest month ever and I had to work in fields I don't really like. It was really hard not to give in and lower my rates but I am glad I didn't and never accepted the now very fashionable "due to the economical situation" speech.

A much more interesting poll... Apr 30, 2009

... would have been how busy were you this month compared to the same month last year, given the current crisis.

Anyway, for me this month has been about the same as the last (possibly a little less busy, but through personal choice rather than a lack of offers), and this year so far considerably more profitable than last year.

it looks like it was slower... May 1, 2009

but i had to turn down a lot of work in april due to family stuff (illness of a family member). I often had to turn down rush jobs and the last two weeks was not accepting anything new. Last month i was A LOT busier.

Business as usual May 1, 2009

Pretty much the same as January, February and March, except that I took nearly a week off to attend a writing skills workshop.
As Marie-Hélène wishes to know: quite comparable also to April 2008...
I assume we are talking about work (translation and nothing but translation in my case)

A little slower... May 1, 2009

I agree with Marie-Hélène May 1, 2009

Given that I took ten days off in April, comparing it with March, which was an OK month (made slightly more than target) doesn't make much sense. April is never a good month for me because I have to look after chldren on Easter holiday. However, this April was better than last, which is encouraging in this economic climate, especially as April is the first month in my financial year. Not so busy May 1, 2009

But still managed to earn a satisfactory amount of money.

In January I feared everything would go wrong (January sales were a complete disaster), but it seems I was wrong. Serves me right?

Very hard and disappointing May 1, 2009

I don't know whether it is the recession or is it that there were many holidays but compared to last year, at the moment I start to feel somewhat worried about the situation.
Fortunately, there are enough people who want to learn or improve their English and Spanish what keeps my income quite satisfactory but I wish I could earn more money with translation jobs even though I like teaching languages.
