But I console myself in the fact that my customers equally often forget to attach the files to translate in the first place.

I usually realise just a split second after hitting the "send" button...

And of course, there is that other lovely blooper: sending a blank reply to a routine query. My e-mail programme "reply" button changes to "send", once you have hit "reply". I do not always notice that I have already hit reply, which gives the receiver of the blank e-mail the charming impression that I am an absent-minded, techno-challenged idiot. So be it.

any translator can have a strange moment when you somehow feel compelled to hit reply even though you've just written a beautiful email to the client and forget to attach the said translation file - or sometimes even resend the original file back and say that the translation is done hence worrying unnecessarily the client! just relieved a minute later with the said desired translation file

that's when you have to stop, have a nice cup of tea, and relax for a few minutes

mind you, in fairness, I've had clients who sent me the file to be translated ... and there was no attachment it seems to be a common occurrence in our industry

Gmail Labs came up with this "undo" feature which allows you to retract your sent email within those critical "few seconds" following the hasty click on "send" button. Like most of us, I usually realize that I didn't attach the file or that I forgot to spell-check my message immediately after hitting that send button. And oh what a "once" it turned out to be.

About 3 weeks ago I send an application to a very promising outsourcer.
All credentials and certificates were attached except for the explicitly
asked-for CV. Never received a reply.

Oh well, this won't happen again.

...I use Mozilla Thunderbird, which has a useful feature which reminds you to attach a file before sending if it detects any key words in the body of your email (e.g. "attached", "CV" etc.).

Otherwise, I'm sure I would forget a lot more often!

I'm interested to hear that there is software to avoid this, and I shall be looking into it.

What I do try to do anyway is to follow the advice of a fellow Prozian from sometime back, which is to attach the file BEFORE writing your message. That has meant I've made some progress in this department. Thank you to whoever that was, although I'm afraid that my memory means that you are anonymous for the time being!

A good habit Jun 11, 2011

This happened to me a couple of times many years ago but then someone suggested that it was a good idea to get into the habit of attaching any documents to the email *before* you start writing the message.

Works for me.

Yesterday I managed to send an empty email to a client of mine! I was so exhausted... me too, I realized just after clicking on send

Luckily it was Friday evening for the client too!

a couple of times I've sent the email and realized too late. And the same has happened with clients sending ME emails without documents to translate. However, I also have Mozilla thunderbird which reminds you before you send....so it's been quite a while since I made that goof!

This was an idea which I thought of myself a while ago, and I was delighted to find that the Mozilla development team had come up with the actual product. You can set any words you like as triggers (which means that you can set words in different languages for delivery to different clients), so it's much more difficult to forget the files.

Whether you send *all* the files required is, of course, a different matter!
