"[Uno de] los objetivos del estudio [fue]:

Recabar información de expertos/as en los ***temas centrales*** sobre las rutas y modalidades migratorias, tanto tradicionales como nuevas."

As in a previous question, I can see the obvious literal translation: "central themes" or "central topics." But that doesn't seem to fit here. It appears to me that the researchers want to get information from experts in specific fields, info which can then be applied to the subject of the current study (effect of migration on spread of AIDS).
