I know devenir = become, mismo = the same, etc, what I DON'T know is what IDEA the author is trying to express.

The idea could be to fulfill/become truly/advance oneself, as its "el mismo" rather than "lo mismo"

"evolve" may well be better, and you could then leave out "el mismo", or play areound with "personal evolution/development"

Según yo lo entiendo, lo que quiere decir es que la persona sea el artífice de su propio destino, se las arregle por sí misma, no dependa de las normas que les imponen otros o de lo que opinen los demás.

Me parece que, especialmente en la segunda frase, se aclara que "el depresivo está agotado de valerse por sí mismo". Esa es la idea que me da.
