I know that in art a 'paisajista' is a landscape painter, but in literature what is an 'autor paisajista'? My text says that in Spanish literature the term is nowadays often derogatory.

Enormous thanks to everybody. A shining example of how much trouble Kudozers will go to in order to help out a colleague in difficulty.
Due especially to Patricia's and mareuq's references, I now know what an 'autor paisajista' IS.
However, it still leaves the question of what best to CALL that kind of writer in English.
In the end I'm going to use Natalia's literal but well-referenced translation 'landscape writer', not because it's necessarily the best term in itself but because the whole text is about landscapes and landscaping.

It would help to have more context. Translatol said that the term is (sometimes) derogatory, and I believe that naturalism (for some people) is now considered passe. "Descriptive author" seems too general to me.

Well, I've certainly aroused some controversy. So far, I find Patricia's reference very helfpul, but I don't find Ruth so far off the right track either. I think of Blasco Ibáñez, whose early novels were influenced by Zola but who at the same time gave wonderful descriptions of the Valencian 'landscape'. And I do find that my friends outside Valencia tend to look down on him. Anyway the context is that of 'creative' literature.

Robert's answer is the correct term, but I need to point out that this style of writing has NOTHING TO DO WITH NATURE (ENVIRONMENT) and Thoreau is not an example. It deals with HUMAN NATURE, see this link: http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-naturalism/

This is my conclusion from the few hits of "autor paisajista" in Google. I do not believe its connotation is negative.

Explanation:
This seems untranslatable in one word... Why not use a descriptive phrase to follow the word 'paisajista' in quotes? It's close to 'nature writer', but that would be a nature without the villages and people without which an author isn't a novelist (i.e. writes literature rather than exposition on volcanoes and desert islands...) And 'naturalist', being very close too, is focused not on nature but on 'naturalist' behaviour, generally in 'unnatural' settings (cities...) A tough one.
