Discussion

Endre Both Apr 26, 2002:
What do these Manahmen refer to, in terms of time, place, etc.?

investigation by the security police

Might work if you wish to include "sicherheitspolizeilich"

Peer comment(s):

agree Beate Lutzebaeck : I give up - if Germany still uses the term Sicherheitspolizei, you might as well use security police in English.

agree Jan Liebelt : I hate to say it - because "security police" sounds stilted - but I think Darien is right.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Georg, I was inclined to opt for Jan's more simple translation but then again it is always better to be on the safe side. Thanks to everyone else too for their contributions. "

Police investigation

Why make it more complicated than it is?
Peer comment(s):

disagree S. GARMSEN : I think that at least the "security" aspect should be mentioned, as it's not necessarily the same thing. See my suggestion below.

What are the police for, if not to ensure security?
disagree wrtransco : then "polizeiliche" would have been enough in German too, right?

German often has words we consider "superfluous" in German, but having seen teh entire paragraph, I accept that "police investigations" is incorrect for the context.
agree Jeannie Graham : security police investigation perhaps

disagree Kathleen : In the DDR, the "Stasi" was NOT the same as the "Polizei!!

Police security investigation measures

Yeah, it seems quite odd, but that's what it is, if you want to go for the more complicated way.

\"Police security investigative measures\" probably sound better

security and police investigations/investigative measures

investigations or investigative measures, depending on the context.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jan Liebelt : I'm sorry, but that sounds naff, how ever many years you've had in the business.

What on earth does "naff" mean?! (British slang?)

Just an explanation:

It is true, the is a big difference between Polizei and Sicherheitspolizei (Eurodicautom translates Sicherheitspolizeigesetz as Law on the Security Police). In Germany, the Sicherheitspolizei is, among other things, responsible for the protection of constituional bodies (verfassungsmäßige Einrichtungen) and subjects of international law (Vertreter von Völkerrechtssubjekten).

Unfortunately, the term Sicherheitspolizei and its translation "security police" gained "notoriety" during the Nazi regime (see German/English glossary below) - this is why I'm not too keen on Georg's (otherwise correct) suggestion. I'll have a think and see whether I can come up with s.th. less "loaded".

Investigative methods/techniques used by the security police

I lived near Leipzig (Sachsen) for almost 10 years. The methods AND techniques of the "Stasi" were ledgendary among my colleagues.

agree jerrie : methods is good
