Italian term

di gran tono

Italian to English Other Tourism & Travel
"...il grande ristorante di lusso, ***di gran tono***, di perfezione"

That's how the phrase reads ! I'd like to preserve the rhetorical climax "di lusso, di gran tono, di perfezione"

Something along the lines of "high-flying", "high-ranking", "posh", "plush"......"high-faluting" will do ?

Any ideas ?

Hello Umberto. How have you translated the rest of the text? That might help us come with the right fit?
potra Jul 15, 2007:
I like posh or even 'top-notch'

grand

it depends how you write the rest of the sentence as to whether it needs a noun with it, I think, but I think "grand" used this way encompasses the sense of "tono"

but I'm not sure either how you'd get the rhetorical climax...

"high-tone"

just "high-tone" would work. also "high-end", which is less elegant, however, than "high-tone"

of great atmosphere

Tono refers mainly to sounds, but saying noisy or of great sound would be inapproriate since how does a restaurant sound like ...It could be of great fame rather. But the mixture of the sounds, appearence, environment altoghether can yield a great atmoshpere ,so " the grand luxurious restaurant of great atmosphere,....(of great fame) and so on.
