I am translating a Strafbefehl with bits deleted presumably for confidentiality reasons. It contains the following sentence:
Der Angeschuldigte wurde einer polizeilichen Kontrolle unterzogen, als er wegen einem technischen Defekt mit seinem Lastwagen, Kontrollschild --- samt Anhänger, Kontrollschild --- stehen blieb.
I presume that Kontrollschild is some form of identification, maybe followed by a number in the spaces in the text. Can anyone confirm this and what would be the British English equivalent?

I think that you are right. I am not sure about England, but in the US commercial transport vehicles have to have inspection stickers attached to their trucks and their trailers to prove that they are regularly check and thus proven roadworthy.

I am Swedish (13 yrs in the BRD) but I immediately come to think of the square, orange-coloured plates that every lorry/truck has to carry on three of its sides if they are carrying "dangerous goods" like petrol, diesel, ammoniak or similar (if I remember correctly, '030' means diesel.
Number plate is 'Kfz-Kennzeichen' or simply 'Kennzeichen' or 'Nummernschild' to my knowledge.
'Kontrollschild' I haven't heard either.

because that's "amtliches Kennzeichen" followed by a letter/number code. That's the only German word for it I have ever read in documents by the police.
