I understand off as out of the filed, but I don't know how to understand "off and off".

Yes, but Ellen, did you not notice that the writer seems to have deliberately used an original construction 'off and off'? We should not assume it is a mistake for either 'on and off' or 'off and on'

what I had in mind was not <sporadically> . I would have translated it literally, namely on the field and off it, i.e. he is popular both during his job AND his time off.

Here, I don't think there's any intended reference to 'off and on', in the sense of 'occasionally, sporadically'

The usual expression would be 'on and off the field', here I suspect there is a hidden meaning: all his athletic ability is exercised 'off' the field, but possibly in 2 different activities ;-)

I don't think so, the text says "off and off" and it's on purpose. It's an extremely ironic text, biography type, but mocking the people it talks about.

Non, ce n'est pas une faute de frappe. Je pensais à : "uniquement / exclusivement en dehors du terrain" étant donné que "off and on" peut se comprendre : "par intermitence".

agree Paul Zaghedoud : Bonne suggestion. Reste à adapter le COD en fonction du type d'athlète (terrain, piste ?). La piste (sans jeu de mot) des "aventures amoureuses" me semble assez plausible vu le contexte ironique donné par Julien ; à confirmer tout de même ;- )

oui, je suis d'accord avec la piste amoureuse aussi
neutral Tony M : I'm worried that the '..et seulement...' adds an idea that is not there in the original; I feel sure the meaning is 'off the field (in 2 different contexts)'
