residencia geriatrica

Interesting discussion! How people try to deny "geriatric" involves nursing care is beyond me. I spent my childhood going three times a week to a "residencia geriátrica," where if people hadn't needed nursing care (and even medical care sometimes), I wouldn't have had to go visit anybody there in the first place. Now, don't take my word for it. Let us better see the meaning of gereatrics (adjective form: geriatric), which is a branch of medicine; I think that says it all: it's much more than just "assisted living."
In its entry for noun, the Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary says of geriatrics: "plural but singular in construction: a branch of medicine that deals with the problems and diseases of old age and aging people."
In the entry for adjective, the same dictionary says: "geriatric. Of, relating to, affecting, or being aged individuals geriatric population in a nursing home."

"Nursing home" is the exact translation for a "residencia geriátrica".

Please don't assume about my experience or non experience, as I think that would be a very unprofessional comment. What I have referred to was 'Residencia Geriatrica' how can that be translated as 'assisted living facility' I have not seen that refering to 'a' residence in particular anywhere, at least not here in Australia. "retirement home" - 1,940,000 hits
"senior retirement living" - 16,200 hits
I get the feeling that people who are making the "nursing home" suggestions do not have much direct experience in this area.

I agree with Catherine and disagree with Muriel that obviously has been hurt deeply by the term 'nursing homes' however, I will have to say that a retirment home or village describes better the assisted living facility.

I am SOOO DEEPLY shocked that colleagues are equating "geriatric" with the need for nursing care. Please see my discussion below. Perhaps the problem lies with the fact that younger people don't have to think of the subtleties. I know many seniors (cohorts, since I am elderly too) who reside in assisted living facilities but are not sick.

This, of course is completely different. Either of these terms is used to described a group of individual residences (houses or flats) which have a warden (warden-controlled) to look out for the residents. There is the option of the living areas being specially adapted for the residents according to any disability. This scheme is a way of the elderly retaining their independence, while still benefitting on the social aspect and also having the warden to call upon when needed.

In UK, Nursing Homes tend to have a quota of nursing staff, and the elderly residents are more bedbound. These are for elderly people who have a prescribed diagnosis of physical or mental illness. Care Homes, on the other hand, is the now widely used term for residential elderly care, where there is either a mix of more physically able and less physically able, or only physically able.
