Eve explains to the serpent concerning the tree whose fruit had been forbidden, describing it as being in the midst of the garden. God had not described its location, but had merely characterized it as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There is no necessary contradiction, for Eve, as we may well understand, is stressing the location of the tree and not its significance. The two clauses really complement one another. In Genesis 2:9, the tree of life was said to be in the midst of the garden. At this point, however, there is no need to mention the tree of life, and it certainly is unwarranted to say, as some commentators do, that at this point the narrative ***does not seem to know the tree of life***. In replying to the serpent there would have been no reason to mention the tree of life.
