just another form of the other comments. In the UK "Handwerk" in the sense of learned skills is mainly used as trades like "a master of his trade" = "Ein Meister seines Handwerks".

Ich verstehe das so, dass die Handwerksbetriebe mit ihren Produkten oder Dienstleistungen, die - im Gegensatz zur Industrie - speziell auf einen bestimmten Kunden zugeschnitten sind, durch neue Produktideeen, innovative Entwicklungen und ständige Produkt- (oder Dienstleistungs-) Verbesserungen ein ähnlich hohes Niveau erreichen können, wie ein Industriebetrieb.
Innovation verbinden wir eigentlich fast immer mit der Industrie (z.B. BMW oder Bosch entwickeln neue fortschrittliche Technologien). Jetzt beansprucht aber das Handwerk diesen Begriff "Innovation" auch für sich, um sich so vom oft traditionellen Handwerkerbild zu differenzieren und um zu sagen: "Wie können auch mit der großen Industrie mithalten, aber eben auf unsere Weise."

: no real reason, but my gut has a strong dislike of "avant-garde" in connection with IT technology, just sounds too artsy (as in art art rather than trade)

Handwerk is usually translated as 'the professions and trades'. Of course, innovative, forward-looking, trendsetting, trailblazing, imaginative etc would also be Ok

Handwerk is dominated by small companies with few employees, so the decision makers are usually the master craftsmen. Why not just put them in the enumeration as people rather than a sector? Something like "Entrepreneurs, business founders, decision makers from... as well as innovative master craftsmen were briefed on..."

contemporary design
Well, I'm not really convinced about the 'innovative' bit in this context, and as you know, Edwin, this sector is generally referred to as 'crafts and design' as produced by craftspeople and designers. I think I might be tempted to go for 'contemporary design' which although very general does have the sense of being innovative (which all design is, after all, unless pastiche, even if retro in feel) as well as being potentially bespoke. Maybe the distinction is between 'crafts' and 'design' but I feel this is a rather bogus borderline.
