"IEEE 802.11n-2009
...
IEEE 802.11n-2009 is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11-2007 wireless networking standard to improve network throughput over the two previous standards—802.11a and 802.11g—with a significant increase in the maximum raw data rate from 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s with the use of four spatial streams at a channel width of 40 MHz.
802.11 is a set of IEEE standards that govern wireless networking transmission methods.
...
When 802.11g was released to share the band with existing 802.11b devices, it provided ways of ensuring coexistence between legacy, and successor devices. 802.11n extends the coexistence management to protect its transmissions from legacy devices, which include 802.11g, 802.11b and 802.11a.
...
To achieve maximum output a pure 802.11n 5 GHz network is recommended."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n-2009

"Pure mode networks stay pure by ignoring association requests from older stations, and sending Beacon frames with an information element that directs associated stations to use only the new 802.11n transmission modes. Pure mode networks also transmit Beacon frames using the TGnSync high throughput PLCP, which makes them unreadable by legacy devices. Mixed mode access points are visible to legacy devices because they transmit Beacons using the legacy format."

http://www.wifihr.net/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&p...

When 802.11n devices are operating in pure high-throughput mode, this is known as “greenfield mode,” because it lacks any constraints imposed by prior technologies.
This mode achieves the highest effective throughput offered by the 802.11n standard.
