Is this study a clinical trial? If so, I would translate 'testemunha' as 'control' or 'control treatment.' That is, a placebo, a substance that has no treatment value - in this case distilled water - that is compared with a treatment to the experimentally assess its effectiveness. Control treatment are given to the 'control group', used as a baseline measure in the study.
