A typical instrument for measuring a gas concentration must be calibrated with a 'zero' gas -- with which the readout is set to zero with a 'zero' control -- and a 'calibration gas' of known concentration, with which the readout is adjusted to the known concentration using a 'span' control. Accurate calibration will require one or two repetitions.
