German term

stringent (here)

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
In a description of a building in Switzerland written in the florid language usually seen when architects and similar are talking about their work. This section is dealing with lighting arrangements.

In diese Decke eingehängt ist eine Kombination aus zwei, stringent gehaltenen Leuchten des Herstellers XYZ.

Thank you for your help.

Johanna Timm, PhD Apr 6, 2012:
Orla good point! I fully agree.
Helen Shiner Apr 6, 2012:
@orla Yes, it can mean 'compelling', 'conclusive', etc. but in philosophy and related areas it does mean 'rigorous'. From the context, I do think the latter is more 'convincing'!!
oa_xxx (X) Apr 6, 2012:
Would concentrate more on what stringent means in German than in English:
http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/stringent
aufgrund der Folgerichtigkeit sehr einleuchtend, überzeugend; logisch zwingend, schlüssig

Synonyme zu stringent:
bündig, einleuchtend, einsichtig, evident, folgerichtig, gesetzmäßig, klar, konsequent, logisch, organisch, plausibel, schlagend, schlagkräftig, schlüssig, stichhaltig, triftig, überzeugend, unangreifbar, zwingend
transatgees (asker) Apr 5, 2012:
More context Here is more context but I don't think it adds anything.

As for the request for a picture, I might well not have needed to post this query if I had one!

I am coming to the conclusion that jc cantrell is on the right track,as is Johanna.
Helen Shiner Apr 5, 2012:
as in To capture the essence of the artfully produced Entomologist, the design was kept stark and clinical, a bit like the morally ambiguous lead character.

Helen Shiner Apr 5, 2012:
@Johanna It is perfectly possible to translate 'gehalten' here as 'kept', as in 'kept stark', 'kept austere'. This refers to design decisions and often can be safely left out of the EN since it is to be presumed that any design elements are anyway a matter of choice.
Johanna Timm, PhD Apr 5, 2012:
but "stringent" describes "gehaltenen" (adverb) - which seems to limit the choice of words one could use // the comma makes a big difference ; zwei stringent gehaltenen versus zwei, stringent gehaltenen
Ramey Rieger (X) Apr 5, 2012:
Design in this case, I imagine either austere or pristine. COULD WE HAVE SOME CONTEXT PLEASE??? A picture would be even better.
jccantrell Apr 5, 2012:
Could be anything But, in the USA, stringent can mean rigid, constrained, so I might go with "fixed in position" or something like that.
However, with freekfluweel, a picture would be nice.
freekfluweel Apr 5, 2012:
need image could be anything...
Ramey Rieger (X) Apr 5, 2012:
@ Helen spare, stringent, ascetic, prosaic, sober, chaste (my favourite) and/or solemn, basic, stern, clean, clear, virginal, pristine, straightforward.....
your turn!
Helen Shiner Apr 5, 2012:
@transatgees I would have thought, if it is talking about the design of the lighting' that it means it is austere, sparse, simplified, stark, even rigorous. Something along those lines.

Hi transatgees, since the overall effect is intended to be one of a Produktionsstätte, then stark is probably the way to go in my view. Were it a monastery, for instance, then maybe 'austere' or a Modernist gallery, then equally 'simplified', etc.

I really don't believe this has anything to do with lighting being 'fixed'. I translate this sort of material the whole time and it really does, in my view, refer to the design aesthetic.

stringent/pristine lighting
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : 'mounted' would be 'montiert' or 'angebracht' or something along those lines.

and affixed? OR just stringent lighting, which was my first idea
disagree Cilian O'Tuama : hat nichts mit der Anbringung zu tun

agree philgoddard : Austere. Ascetic means practising extreme religious discipline.

I hear you although I saw one or two ghits - see added reference

after all, we're dealing with a Produktionsstätte.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : It might well be functional, but this is not what the term means. Yes, but that's far too all-encompassing. There are lots of good suggestions here; no need to look for anything more. It's just up to the Asker now to make the choice!

I know, I can't seem to come up with the right term. "Functional" as in "The New Objectivity"

contemporary light fixtures

Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : Really not conveying the right idea unfortunately. Contemporary art and architecture can be far from rigorous, stark, austere, etc.

That what contemporary light fixtures are: stringent. The word stringent is the same in English. Why not just keep the word?
