French term
une épure (in context)
French to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
an article about the work of an artist

a paring down
One option might be a paring down - from the expression to pare down i.e. to simplify or strip something down to the bare essentials.

I don't think the source text is referring to something concrete like a sketch, I think it's describing what his work represents, its style.

I think a purification would be another option if you want to stay closer to the source text word épure

Note from asker:
thanks this is the right direction, the alliteration with pure seems impossible to keep but I like your proposal |

Comment: "Thank you for the angle, I haven't used paring down but this is what helped the most. Thank you all for your ideas!

a well groomed/crisp
a well groomed/crisp, highlight (highpoint - high note), "soothing to the eye beach", which refocuses......
Example sentence:
is the climax of, is the highpoint of...
-1
20 mins
a sketch
The word can also mean "blueprint" in the sense of a plan for life, but here it means the outline of something.

essence
Refer to the reference post and whilst I agree that the suggestion of "paring down", I think that it goes one step further to strike at the very heart, the essential, the essence. Beyond a paring down to being positively stripped right down.

Yes, essence does present the difficulty with 'essential' being close by.

Note from asker:
sure Nikki but then what do I do with the rest of the text where essential or essence is required.... paring down still stands in this case |

Helle LauretteT. I gathered you had understood but thought this might be a source of inspiration? I do rather like 'paring down' though!
