Italian term

confitto territoriale

Italian to English Other Environment & Ecology
Not at all sure I've tagged this query correctly, but can't think of a better tag to apply, sorry. I'm translating a study on the relationship between airports and their environs in which that nightmare word "territorio/territoriale" appears with terrifying frequency, almost always creating translation difficulties. In this case, here is the context: "La crescita del trasporto aereo porterà ad un conseguente aumento delle conflittualità ambientali-territoriali". Any ideas how best to translate that "territoriale"? Many thanks, Sarah.

impact on the local environment

The first thing that comes to mind is something like "an increased impact on the local environment"

local environmental disputes/conflict

I think I'd go for local here.

I think it is disputes not impact that is being referred to here.

local environmental conflicts

territoriale often means "local" and here it seems pretty clear as it is dealing with an airport

conflict between local needs (and the environment)

without further context that would be my suggestion, but not sure. Could be simply local environmental impacts as Ian suggests. Is there any further context that could help?
Peer comment(s):

agree bluenoric : I also think that here the conflict is ambiente vs. territorio, i.e. the protection of the environment against the positive economical influence in the area

ecological imbalance/disequilibrium

territoriale can mean regional/of a defined area... but together with environment it means ecology..
So if there is an Environmental and Regional imbalance.. it is indeed an Ecological imbalance/disequilibrium

unease around its effect on the (local community and) surrounding area.

There may or may not be a particular reason why the writer has chosen to use conflitualittà over conflitto; I'm taking a stab in the dark by suggesting it may relate more to unease (or unrest/protest/resentment) than outright conflict.

Also, it appears to me that the dichotomy is not between the ambiente and territorio, which are generally complementary, but rather between the airport itself (i.e. its proponents) and the natural and socio-economic ecosystems; ambientali-territoriali is thus an overarching description encompassing the environment, the community, the existing economic systems, places or sites of interest, and so forth which may be compromised by the airport.

Perhaps "surrounding area" is a useful term to encompass both the environment and the territorio, whatever the latter means in this context?

Local community is optional; maybe it's a bit too much here.

Not the most elegant solution, but hopefully gets the message across :-)
Example sentence:

...will stir greater unease around its effect on the local community and surrounding area.

...will lead to greater unease around its effect on the surrounding area.
