Spanish term

oposición

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
From a document on sailing directions.

Una vez estemos en la *oposición* Faro Ribadeo - Punta de la Cruz pondremos rumbo a Punta Arroxo (Rv=140º) hasta entrar en la *oposición* Punta de la Cruz - Muelle de García (del propio Club Náutico).

As far as my research has indicated, "oposición" is a point on the "enfilación", but I can't find a translation for it in English.

Spanish from Spain.

Charles Davis Nov 25, 2012:
@ Peter So am I. An enfilación is a transit in BrE (as you know better than I) and is known as a range in AmE. The difference is as you say, and as explained here; in an oposición the observer is between the two objects:

Good luck with the search.
Peter Guest Nov 25, 2012:
enfilación-oposición I'm looking for a more precise term for this. The two points are opposite each other on opposite sides of the estuary. When the vessel reaches the line joining them, they are in "opposition" (the vessel is not). I have always heard this called a transit, but I find it unsatisfactory as transit are usually leading lines or lines denoting safe margins made by objects aligned one behind another ashore. In this case, the vessel is between them and cross the line joining them. If you saw the answer I gave earlier, please disregard it, I have withdrawn it.

It seems best to use something like this. It describes how fasr into the estuary yo go befor changing course. I suppose the lateral limit instructions have been or will be given.
Tricky channels up north with wide tidal ranges...

Have a look at this, you can see the numerous light houses, one Punta Arroxo, for transits.
