Japanese term
○ 正
Japanese to English
Tech/Engineering
Construction / Civil Engineering
In an assignment that I'm currently working on, they use the symbols ○ and 正 next to the names of those involved in the project/paper.
The format is like so...
Company Name ○ Author 1 正 Author 2
I can't really find information on what exactly those symbols signify. If I were take a wild guess I say that they either signify a author/co-author or show the rank position of each person in the project.
This is the first time I've come across something like this, so any help would be appreciated.

check mark, and PI (principal investigator)
I think you are right. Maru is the same thing as a check mark, and "sei" means that person is the principal investigator.

Informal Symbol ○ ('maru') is part of the inspection code set: ○/△/X used in-house to signify the following: X= NG (No Go!), △('sankaku) Problem! need fixing/Rework needed, ○ All OK/Fine/No problem.
In marketing, on the other hand, Symbol ○ is thought insufficient to highlight reliability where 'quality' is the magic word, and so is enhanced with the insertion in it of 「優」 for excellence ("maruyuu!")
