Afternoon. This is from a book I’m translating about the history of violence and lack of justice in Colombia. This passage describes the jubilation the author and his friends felt the day the dictatorship of General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla was overthrown (May 10, 1957).

The original sentence structure is giving me brain ache, and I can’t seem to come up with anything decent in English, so could use some suggestions.

Context:

“Ese día fue glorioso para el País, salimos temprano a organizar las marchas del triunfo. La toma de la Bastilla en la Revolución Francesa, la considerábamos un juego de nenes. Ese día estábamos construyendo la historia más grande de la humanidad, al menos así lo considerábamos los protagonistas del momento. Recorríamos triunfantes las calles y avenidas principales de la ciudad y cada vez se unía más gente: hombres, mujeres, niños y ancianos.”
