Have just started my second article on benzodiazepine withdrawal. Not sure of the best term for this, which did not come up in the first article. I have found "discontinuation" but am not sure. It refers, obviously, to breaking the habit but I need a more formal expression.

Aunque no es muy frecuente, existen algunos estudios que analizan la viabilidad de aplicar programas sistemáticos de retirada de las BZD. La mayoría de estos estudios contrastan la eficacia de la retirada pautada progresiva del fármaco (tapering) con la eficacia de la Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) y/o la combinación de ambas intervenciones para la **deshabituación**. Aunque algunos estudios han encontrado que la combinación de tapering más CBT no es más efectiva que el tapering aislado a la hora de disminuir el consumo de BZDs (Oude Voshaar et al., 2003); son más numerosos los estudios que muestran que la CBT combinada con tapering produce mayores porcentajes de **deshabituación** que la sola retirada del fármaco (Baillargeon et al., 2003; Oude Voshaar, Couvée, van Balkom, Mulder & Zitman, 2006).

My reading was that "tapering" was being contrasted with "deshabituación", whereas "weaning" is just a synonym.

@Liz, I now see what you mean, (I work much better in the morning!) that deshabituación is not the correct term in Spanish, based on the original articles my author is citing. I have actually found in Spanish examples of "discontinuación del uso ..." but it sounds a bit odd. At this point I think I will just go with discontinuation.

I found the article by the Dutch author and discontinuation is the term used in the English translation.

My [unclear] point is that the Spanish writer has misinterpreted/mistranslated the original article, IMHO.

@Muriel, I think you need to look at the original article, written by a French-Canadian, together with all the "English" translations of this article. "Dishabituation" is not suitable here.

They are different concepts. As I said before, 'dishabituation' is specifically about the process of breaking the habit, which your author is referring to here. It's a valid term used in psychology in reference to addiction. Using 'discontinuation' would change your author's meaning.

My client, a hospital research institute, says that they usually use withdrawal when they need to talk about "deshabituación" but discontinuation is fine, especially given the fact that "retirada" is also used in the same text. Thanks for all your help.

I have been looking at articles included in the bibliography of the article I am working on and it seems that discontinuation is the normal term although what exactly the difference is between discontinuation and withdrawal, I have no idea! I'm pretty sure that weaning is not the term here as that would, indeed, seem to be a synonym of tapering off. I will speak to the client tomorrow and if anyone is interested get back to you all then.

I rarely use a 5, but I'm really certain about this one. It's a term used in psychology and the treatment of drug addicts.

It's not quite the same as weaning. 'Dishabituation' is specifically about reversing the habit, often used with 'habituation'. Examples:
