German term

das Relief des umliegenden Bergpanoramas

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
Das Design des Teppichbodens wurde extra für diesen Raum entworfen und zeigt das Relief des umliegenden Bergpanoramas. Die Zimmerdecke durchquert eine beleuchtete Wedelspur.

Not too keen on the use of "relief" here. A picture would help. Also not too sure what Wedel refers to. I used to live near a place called that but it's obviously something else!!! The carpet has been designed for a nightclub in an Austrian hotel.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Discussion

Yorkshireman May 7, 2014:
Topographical carpet Possibly a little late - try a Google search on topographical carpet.

Horst Huber (X) May 5, 2014:
With Yorkshireman. You could use such a representation as carpeting. The hairy point is still that "Relief" denotes essentially a three-dimensional imaging of topography, and a "Panorama" a (maximally 360 dgree) representation of a view from one point.
Yorkshireman May 5, 2014:
Very probably... ...something like this:
http://tinyurl.com/mlahw2q

Close to the bottom of the page - in my books, a topographical panorama:-)
Ramey Rieger (X) May 4, 2014:
@freekfluweel I'll check it out, thanks!!
Yorkshireman May 4, 2014:
@Ramey Because, when you stand in the middle of it (or anywhere else on the carpet), you have to see the effect all around you, not just in one particular direction. The whole thing must be similar to an aerial view that the viewer can stand and walk around on.
freekfluweel May 3, 2014:
@RR Alas, you can't avoid the Google Imperium. Probably they know more than the NSA by now. G-SE, G-Store (they know what your interests are), G-Maps especially NOT designed to be a stand-alone navigation system, so they know where you are at all times and upcoming G-Glasses, they will even know what you are looking at. I don't like it either, but monitoring 350 million G-mail accounts is even for those kids in Silicon Folly too hard a job!

You should be more worried about using Outlook i.c.w. Yahoo, not with G-Mail. Try E-mailtray, an email client and notifier and it's free!

Ramey Rieger (X) May 3, 2014:
@Yorkshireman I don't know why they wouldn't work on the floor if they work as a photograph, wall hanging, bedspread.
Ramey Rieger (X) May 3, 2014:
Hey freekfluweel you are so right. I'm just loathe to go through the changing procedure after t-online swallowed every single contact I had. But I'm going to have to bite the bullet, I guess. G-mail is Google? Not so hot on the privacy bit, are they?
freekfluweel May 2, 2014:
@RR: Yahoo sucks!!! The most unreliable mailservice around: slow, constantly offline and they change the complete lay out much too often and you have to change your password every three months... Used to have an account but now I am a happy G-mail user.
Ramey Rieger (X) May 2, 2014:
Here is just two examples of millions where light and shadow create a lanscape - also called silhouettes:

Yorkshireman May 2, 2014:
@Ramey Topography can also be depicted on a flat surface by the clever use of shading and visual perspectives. A silhouette remains my "paper cut-out" analogy.

I quote: "A silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject. The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the whole is typically presented on a light background, usually white, or none at all. "
Horst Huber (X) May 2, 2014:
It may actually represent what "Relief" in German denotes, a kind of map that reproduces elevations and depressions, mountains and valleys,
and you would actually step on the depictions of the topographical features. We used to have such "3-D" maps mounted on paper mache, totally out of scale, but quite instructive.
Ramey Rieger (X) May 2, 2014:
As far as I know carpets are one dimensional and lay flat on the floor. I doubt that the silhouette is raised in relief to stumble over, but who knows? Furthermore, a silhouette can easily be outlined and contoured with fine, lighter lines.
Yorkshireman May 2, 2014:
Silhouette I don't think silhouette goes far enough (at least not without seeing the thing). It would be just a 2-dimensional, "paper cut-out", of the skyline of the surrounding mountains as seen against the light - not exactly something you could lay on the floor to create a spectacular effect, as it would only work upright and in the line of sight.
I think this is more about relief in the sense of topography
Ramey Rieger (X) May 2, 2014:
@Coquiero Silhoutte was my first thought, too and much less cumbersome than the suggestions so far. Unfortunately, kudoz and yahoo aren't on speaking terms, so I get the notification - when I get them - hours or days later. Please post silhoutte, it's very nice.
freekfluweel May 2, 2014:
@coqueiro Good evening United Kingdom, this is the Netherlands calling, thanks ever so much for this great display. Here are the results of the Dutch jury:

following the US-jury:

Germany: one agree!
Trudy Peters May 1, 2014:
@coqueiro Why don't you post this as an answer?
Coqueiro May 1, 2014:

Marie Lowrie (asker) May 1, 2014:
Thanks. I think it's some kind of ski trail? A picture definitely would have helped here!
Trudy Peters May 1, 2014:
Wedeln probably refers to skiing

silhouette of the surrounding mountains

see discussion - thanks to Trudy, freekfluweel and Ramey ;-)

The form of the commons dining terrace reflects the silhouette of the surrounding mountains ...:

The ‘silhouette’ of the surrounding mountains is always present:

Jalón is one of the most beautiful inland areas of the Costa Blanca region. Nestling in a valley of the same name, also known as the “Vall del Pop” it has extensive vineyards and almond tree orchards, contrasting with the silhouette of the surrounding mountains:

The sinuous form of the 112,000-square-foot building is a direct response to the agrarian nature of the site, the valley in which it sits and the powerful presence and silhouette of the surrounding mountains:

Try Googling (images) on topographical panorama - there are dozens of examples that would fit the bill.
