Portuguese term

é o suficiente

Portuguese to English Law/Patents Law (general) Court documents
This is taken from the judge's report for a Brazilian court case on drug trafficking. The sentence occurs after the judgement is stated regarding culpability and before the report moves on to sentence calculation.

The judge has concluded that the defendant is guilty and dismissed the claims of the defence, other than for sentence reduction. Here is the section it's found in:

"No que respeita aos memoriais da defesa, percebe-se que as teses de defesa foram refutadas,
remanescendo, contudo, as teses relacionadas à dosimetria das penas, que serão examinadas mais adiante.
É o suficiente. DISPOSITIVO Por todo o exposto nesta sentença e pela prova produzida ao longo da investigação e deste processo,..."

Does anyone know what this would mean in this context?

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Mario Freitas

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Mario Freitas Aug 26, 2014:
@ Richard, The criteria to define if it's pro or otherwise is if the expression may be translated by any fluent speaker of the language or by a professional translator. The former applies here. Nevertheless, it takes three "non-pro" votes to revert it, and there is only one, so the question will likely remain as pro.
Richard Purdom Aug 26, 2014:
I do not agree that this is non-PRO level Mario, the different answers here prove that, and I'm not at all sure which one is correct.
That the asker can decipher the rest of the passage proves likewise.
Mario Freitas Aug 26, 2014:
@ Nicola, IMO, Teresa's suggestion is correct. However, to make it sound more natural in English, I would replace the period after "adiante" for a comma, and translatate it as: "... that will be examined further on, which shall be enough/sufficient for the purposes hereof." In Portuguese, we commonly say "this is enough" without saying enough for what, whereas in English, that sounds like the person is angry and is saying "that's enough!" So I think it would be fine to add "for the purposes hereof" or "for [describe purpose]".

sufficient grounds presented

It means there is nothing further to hear. That the judge found the evidence or theses by defence/prosecution satisfactory in order to proceed to issue his sentence.

Resta suficientemente fundamentada
Example sentence:

produzidas provas em audiência, a documentação acostada aos autos já é suficiente para o julgamento da causa

Os fundamentos adotados para o desfecho da lide conferiram suficiente motivação em contraposição ao direito alegado pelo autor

This will suffice.

Another suggestion.
Example sentence:

It was said that this will suffice to establish personal jurisdiction over a foreign defendant.

This will suffice as prima facie evidence of probable cause.

this shall in itself suffice

I am used to using 'shall' rather than 'will' in legal texts.
