Can anybody help with a doubt that has arisen as a result of Valencia's being named host city for the 2007 edition of The America's Cup? We believe the correct translation into Spanish of the competion's name to be "La copa del América" (the America being the first boat to win the competition), whereas the general media seems to have opted for "La copa América". http://www.valencia2007.com/

: El problema es que ya existe otra Copa América: es un campeonato de fútbol en América Latina, no de clubes, sino de selecciones nacionales. El nombre ya es conocido en el medio deportivo hispanohablante. No sé si se presta a confusiones.

Por eso propongo arriba que, de no estar claro en el contexto (por ejemplo en un titular), quizás la ´mejor opción sería decir "La Copa América de Vela"

that's the official name, and it helps avoid any misunderstanding with the soccer equivalent, although "Copa América" is perfectly understood particularly by Spaniards right now, with all the hype...

As an answer to your comment above, that's totally understandable since boating, sailing,yatching, etc are not very popular sports in Spain... at least for the average medium-class citizen. Personally, I don't think that means "Copa America" or "Copa América de Vela" are bad translations of "America's Cup". Any other option would be as clear (or unclear) as the ones proposed above. That only means that the average citizen is not familiar with sailing (or any sport that is not soccer/football, tennis or basketball...). If somebody mentioned a golf, baseball or cricket tournament/cup to me I would probably have no idea what they were talking about either. That would not mean that "Copa de las Naciones" (golf) is a bad translation.

The majority of Valencia's citizens have never watched the America's Cup. For them, the Copa America, its imprecise Spanish translation, sounds more like a soccer tournament starring Brazil and Ronaldo,
