Italian term

area attrezzata

Italian to English Marketing Tourism & Travel recreational vehicle sites
One of those maddening vague yet trendy terms Italian is so fond of (no offence intended)

Discussion

Anthony Green (asker) Nov 21, 2016:
my attempt This is my current stab at a decent and faithful translation: In total, in Lombardy there are 253 motorhome stopover areas of which 100 are motorhome aires/camper-stops, 32 are camper service stations, 79 are layby parking areas and 42 are campsites.

What do you think of this? It seemed to me that "motorhome stopovers" is the most generic term
Anthony Green (asker) Nov 18, 2016:
British English as this is a tourist brochure, we have decided to use British English for this, so that adds an extra layer of complication to things, as it seems the vocabulary used is rather different on either side of the Atlantic. Sorry for not mentioning that in the question

motorhome aires/motorhome stopovers/camperstops

Seems like the French term (aires) is also frequently used by British motorhomers to refer to these aree di sosta attrezzate.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to everyone. I got something from all of the answers, and used motorhome stopovers as the generic term, but aires had simply never occurred to me, so the points go to you Roberto!"

rest area

a public facility where drivers can stop and have a rest, find toilets, tables for eating.
Also tourist facilities might be a good solution

Does rest area have the connotation for short stops only?
Another option could be: service area
I do not know if the following is reliable.
see quote: In service areas and parking lots on the Autostrada, it is advised to stay for one night, but not for an entire camping trip. In fact, the maximum time allowed per motor home is 24 hours.

Note from asker:
Hmmm, if I were in a motor home and I saw the term "rest area", wouldn't I think I could stay there for an hour or so but not overnight? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_area Here the text says "sia per brevi periodi che per più pernottamenti"

well-equipped stopover area

Sure, it would be nice to have a network of dedicated motorhome parking / stopover areas and in spite of the current reality I do think it's achievable. Like I said though, I believe it will only be achieved by a top-down public sector approach, or if one of the big supermarket giants or similar start a scheme and the concept gathers a toe-hold of credibility. Motorhome stopover

Motorhome stopover

Ciao!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A motorhome stopover (German: Reisemobil-Stellplatz, Italian: Aree di Sosta, French: Aire de Service) is a place designated for the purpose of overnight stopping for recreational vehicles or motorhomes. Motorhome stopovers are usually operated by local authorities. These vehicles can stay overnight or longer depending on terms and conditions specified on a sign by each locality. Parking is in accordance with local building codes and road traffic law.

site with amenities / site with facilities

amenities or facilities makes no difference.
I would call the area di sosta a "camp site". A British tourist with a camper of caravan would be surprised not to be able to stay in a campsite (unless "no caravans" is signed up at the entrance).
To distinguish between punto di sosta and area di .... attrezzato, you could use "with full amenities" and "with basic/no amentities". Camper service would be a camper service or "campervan site".
