@ Lorena You are correct. It is a criminal case (I did not look at the link I posted in my reference) which is here: https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/4394216/united-states-v...
(download PDF) where it states: _AO91 (Rev.8/01) Criminal Complaint, United States District Court, Southern District of Texas. So thank you for that.

Based on context provided by asker This seems like a criminal case to me, asker can you confirm?
I do agree that deft is defendant, but if this is a criminal case, shouldn't the translation be acusado/imputado instead of demandado (civil case terminology)?
Basing my comment on:
1)Defendant informed of rights
2)Defendant advised of charges
3)Defendant requests appointed counsel
4)Bond set
5)Defendant remanded to US Marshals custody

Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure
Rule 5. Initial Appearance
(a) In General.
(1) Appearance Upon an Arrest.
(A) A person making an arrest within the United States must take the defendant without unnecessary delay before a magistrate judge, or before a state or local judicial officer as Rule 5(c) provides, unless a statute provides otherwise.
(B) A person making an arrest outside the United States must take the defendant without unnecessary delay before
a magistrate judge, unless a statute provides otherwise.
(2) Exceptions. …

Thank you, María.
agree Patricia García González : Imputado is also right in Spanish criminal proceedings.

Thank you, Patricia.
agree Richard Vranch : I would just change it to “investigado” as this term has replaced “imputado” in recent years in Spain.

That may work. However, we too need to address diff. bet. legal systems in that a defendant has certain constitutional rights where a person who is merely under investigation does not. Again, it may work. But there's a lot of gray area. Thank you, Richard

How is Defendant (US judicial system) abbreviated? DEFT stands for Defendant (US judicial system). DEFT is defined as Defendant (US judicial system) very frequently.
