Hallo,

Gondelbahn, Zahnradbahn, Schrägaufzug ... nun habe ich mir Gruppenumlaufbahn in Wikipedia angesehen,
und auch die Ortsfotos in der Google Örtlichkeit zu ein und derselben Bergverkehrsgesellschaft, um da rauf und wieder runter zu kommen auf das "Berghorn" (Name geändert), zeigen leider, und das ist jetzt der Twist der Geschichte, sowohl was mit herabhängenden Gondeln als auch was unten auf Schienen Laufendes. Die Behelfslösung steep grade railway vermarktet m.E. bestenfalls äußerst suboptimal (ist 'ne touristische Seite für das "Berghorn", die übersetzt wird), funicular klingt viel besser, kann aber auch potenziell falsch sein, da Gondelfahrten davon nicht erfasst sind. Und 15 Minuten auf 'ne Gondel warten? Kann das sein überhaupt?

DE:
Ab 18.35 Uhr führt die Gruppenumlaufbahn alle 15 Minuten von der Mittelstation auf das "Berghorn".
Letzte Bergfahrt um 21.35 Uhr.

@ Kim Hier geht es nicht um die Intelligenz von Übersetzern, sondern um Logik und Systematik. Kein Wörterbuchbearbeiter würde auf die Idee kommen, Unterbegriffe mit Übersetzungen von Oberbegriffen zu paaren. Und das Kudoz-Glossar sollte immer nur Begriffe paaren, die einander voll entsprechen. Das ist be cable car leider nicht der Fall, weil dieser Terminus noch weitere Seilbahnvarianten außer der Gruppenumlaufbahn abdeckt.

The 'most helpful' criterion Some askers interpret this to mean "what I used in my translation" (i.e. most helpful to me-me-me on this occasion). Others interpret it to mean "worthy of entry in the glossary" (i.e. most helpful to the community at large).

Perhaps the criteria for closing questions should be more clearly defined?

@ Sebastian Warum ich so verwundert bin: Um die Qualifikation als Übersetzer geht es nicht, schon gar nicht um die Note. Es geht darum, dass man Oberbegriffe mit Oberbegriffen übersetzen sollte, und Unterbegriffe mit Unterbegriffen. Im konkreten Beispiel also 'Seilbahn' mit 'aerial cable car' und 'Gruppenumlaufbahn' mit 'pulsed ... gondola', statt diese Begriffe kreuz-und-quer zu mischen. Das wäre so, als würde man 'Fisch' mit 'animal (being)' übersetzen.

Jetzt kann im Glossar das Wortpaar "Gruppenumlaufbahn = cable car" eingetragen werden, was ebenfalls nicht stimmt. Falls ein Kollege für eine Montageanleitung hier nach einer technischen Übersetzung für einen der beiden Begriffe sucht, dürfte er enttäuscht sein oder getäuscht werden, weil die Äquivalenz der Begriffe nicht eingehalten wurde.

Johannes Deine und auch Kims Antwort waren wirklich zu kompliziert für eine Tourismusmarketing-Website und K. Isaacs Antwort sollte als bewusste Marketingverflachung (im Englischen) komplizierter Technik dann inhaltlich korrekt sein, klingt aber nicht so gut. Zudem war US-Englisch erbeten, hier sind Kim und insbesondere MM MA als New Yorker (Wahl-New Yorker? Kann man das bei so langer Wohnsitzdauer/Ansässigkeit und einer Stadt mit soviel Fluktuation überhaupt sagen?) authentische Provider. Aber ausgewählt habe ich die für mich im Kontext einfach sehr gut funktionierende Antwort wie immer ohne Ansehen des Kollegenprofils, nur anhand der eigentlichen Antwort. So mache ich das immer.

@ Sebastian Der Ausdruck 'cable car' ist auf alle Seilbahnen mit Sesseln oder Gondeln anwendbar und geht nicht auf die Besonderheiten der Gruppenumlaufbahn ein. Um derartige allgemein zu übersetzen, hätte man nicht zu fragen brauchen, weil dies in jedem halbwegs anständigen Wörterbuch zu finden ist. Finde ich sehr enttäuschend, hier nur "Seilbahn" zu übersetzen. Ich glaube nicht, dass dies im Sinne des Kunden ist, weil das Alleinstellungsmerkmal dieser Anlage so völlig unterschlagen wird.

Chris The end customer, being an expert in creating language that needs to flow well, has just chosen us to translate the second part of their marketing website also, upon reviewing our deliverable. All my English is finalized by a native speaker of English, other than English in KudoZ, the forums and emails.

The wider community will for sure be noticing this and withdrawing their services accordingly.
The fact that you're asking questions at all about what, to you at least, amounts to a mere "cable car" also speaks volumes.
Non-pro is the common term for such question here.
