Hi there,

I have a literary text which involves a daughter answering questions about her mother. However, I'm stuck with the meaning of solo que here, given the Sí answer.

- Hablando de Dios, ¿son ustedes muy Católicas?

- Sí, solo que yo soy practicante.

Is it more "Yes, but I'm the only practising Catholic", or is it "Yes, just that I'm a practising Catholic". Or is it something else??

Toni Castano Jan 6, 2021: @Kevin My reading. The daughter is probably establishing a difference between her and her mother. When asked if they´re practicing Caholics, she replies she is, but stresses that she´s a practicing one whereas her mother isn´t. This is in my view the meaning of "solo que" in this context. The daughter wants to point out the difference between her and her mother in their approach to religion. In other words, your interpretation ("Yes, but I'm the only practising Catholic") is right.
