German term

Bürgerladen

German to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
"Die Gedenkprägungen sind [...]im Deutschen Sport & Olympia Museum, im Bürgerladen der Stadt Köln, bei KölnTourismus und auch im Fanshop des 1.FC Köln erhältlich."

This is from an article about preparations for the World Cup - this sentence refers to commemorative medals which are being issued by each host city.

Can anyone explain to me what a "Bürgerladen" is and perhaps suggest an English translation. Or is the umlaut over the "u" simply misplaced ...

Many thanks

Ian

Selected

privately-operated multifunctional shops called 'Bürgerladen'

Got interested in the topic as a part of my town-planning researches. There seems to be no existing translation, but there's an enlightening explanation on page 7 of the study below. HTH.

The whole series of new establishments named there would seem to be a hallmark of the decentralisation of public services in favour of private initiative that is happening in small towns.

Cologne Info and Paraphernalia Office (COLPO)

There's also citizen's shop (translated sites only) and citizen's office (a few native hits), but nothing convincing. I don't like citizen shop because it sounds pretty much like Writeaway's suggestion. (How come it's not there anymore, btw?)

My feable attempt avoids the term citizen and describes the Bürgerladen's activities. How about calling the Bürgeladen or Cologne Tourism Office - they should know?

City tourist shop

specialised in Köln memorabilia? Burger because it may be of special interest to the locals.. I'd keep the German and use some sort of English explanation since it's such a hard (impossible??) to translate term.
