Lancashireman Feb 28, 2005:
I reckon it deserves to be up there with Schadenfreude as the German languages gift to humanity.
Non-ProZ.com Feb 28, 2005:
Do anthropologists/philosophers leave this as is? Is German a term understood in English?
Kim Metzger Feb 28, 2005:
Philip, could you clarify what you mean by "Without translation in Anthropology, Philosophy?"

agree Martina Burkert : or conception of man / conception of mankind

agree JeffFish (X) : You could leave the German term, set in italics, and put the translation in parentheses. Interesting reference here: http://motivationalinterview.org/mint/Mint6_2.PDF (page 2).

agree Ana Krämer : imo *conception of man/mankind* conveys the meaning better, as Martina puts it.

agree Hilary Davies Shelby : i would go for concept rather than conception here

agree mstkwasa : It depends on the context, but generally I agree with Hilary that "concept" is better than "conception". If "Menschenbild" is a key concept in the work then I would keep it in German as JeffZ has suggested.

image of humankind/mankind

I don't think the German term has entered the regular vocabulary of English-speaking philosphers/anthropologists.

By subject she means the Menschenbild of the Germans, their image of mankind, which had to be completely rebuilt after the horrors of Nazism and the devastation of the Second World War.
